My newest, a 629-4 MG

Those are some pretty revolvers! I love the grips. Who makes them and do you know the wood that was used?

Thanks.
Herrett's grips, walnut on all of them-"fancy" on the four together ("Shooting Master's" the first three, Jordan "Troopers" the last), "plain" Walnut on the single .

I need some help from the experts here. I'm looking at this sweet 629-4 and I'm seeing the S&W logo on the right side plate. It was my belief that the logo was changed to the left side sometime around 1980 ish. The plastic blue box is much later than that.

Don't get me wrong nice gun just need clarification on the logo.
Mike

Not a mountain gun, but a my 629-4 Classic has the S&W logo on the right side.

Ammo recommendations?

I am a new member of the 629-4 MG club. Any suggestions on factory ammo for target shooting?

Mountain Gun is a take-off on a term for a short artillery piece intended for alpine troops or for British troops in colonial India, where they often had to fight Afghans and Pathans in mountainous terrain.

The intent with the S&W's was that they be worn as defense guns in bear country, often in mountainous areas. They are lighter and handier than the std. barrel profile, easier to pack on a daily basis.

The name was clever, but so many shooters are poorly read that the name went right over their heads.

Look at this very thread. I'm the only one who knew the reason for the name!

I do appreciate the fine photos. The guns will recoil more with magnum ammo, but were meant for emergency use by the few who can deal with the kick. The Jordan Trooper stocks do help enormously.

If I ever get one of these, I'll probably use Buffalo Bore's stiff .44 Special ammo in it, unless I really am in grizzly country.

Thanks for the intel, Texas!

I have had 2 of these beauties since the late 90's. A .44 mag and a 45 Colt. They are, by far, my favorite pieces out of the myriad of handguns I own. I don't necessarily shoot them a lot, but I love handling them and showing them off! They draw a premium in this craptastic state of CA. I work at a local gun shop for a good friend and he tells me right now in California, any nice Mountain Gun will bring about $1100 from a buyer. They are scarce and can only be sold by Private Party Transfer meaning it has to be in this state already prior to our Approved Roster. He's had both of mine sold numerous times and keeps asking if I would.

Never a chance in hell!
