I believe that now, after the President has acted, we must all act again so that our representatives do not mistake our silence for acceptance. Having signed one of the petitions that have been floating around will not be enough. Your representatives need to hear from you again, and again, and again. I can assure you that the anti-gun lobby will write, call, and show up in person every single day from now until a vote is taken, so we need to do the same.

Anyone here may use any of the following in whole or in part.

Dear Representative,

After reviewing the President's comments and actions -

I haven't changed my mind. If you vote to support any type of gun ban or magazine restrictions, you will lose my vote in the next election cycle.

Banning certain weapons or limiting magazine capacity will have absolutely no effect on criminals that already demonstrate complete disregard for laws and human lives. Further, these restrictions and bans would have had no effect on the events we have suffered through recently had they been in place already for the same reasons - the criminals don't care about laws.

I understand that there is a push to do SOMETHING. I am asking you though, as my representative, to make sure that neither personal agendas nor typical - Ready...... FIRE!!!!...... Aim politics are successful in creating measures that "feel good" but do not actually accomplish anything other than the harassment of law abiding citizens.

I will be following your statements and voting record on any such measures.

Sincerely,

TStick

Got a quick response from David Vitter:

Thank you for contacting me to voice your opposition to new gun control laws in response to the recent school shootings in Connecticut and California. I appreciate hearing your views, and I agree with you.

In the wake of these tragedies, many in Washington are calling for increased restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms, arguing that it will help to reduce gun violence. For example, Senator Feinstein (D-CA) has announced plans to reintroduce a ban on assault weapons and to limit magazine capacity. Also, President Obama has signed 23 executive actions and has called on Congress to pass legislation, including background checks for all firearms sales. However, as many supporters of the Second Amendment have pointed out, increased restrictions do little to affect the actions of criminals, who by definition do not abide by the law. Instead, they restrict the rights of law-abiding Americans.

I am a firm believer and ardent supporter of the rights enshrined in the Second Amendment. This constitutional right, and our heritage of using firearms for sporting and self-defense purposes, does not have to be sacrificed to reduce gun-related violence. Instead, we should focus on enforcing the extensive laws already in place and turn our attention to more appropriate measures, such as increasing the safety of our schools and keeping guns out of the hands of those who may be mentally incapable of owning them responsibly.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future about other issues important to you and your family.

Good letter and good response. I hope other don't suffer the same fate as we in NY. Good luck in your fight!
