My next project....The perfect 3" 65 (updated 07/07-DONE! w/pics)

I too thought a pencil barrel 357 would be an awesome gun, but was not sure about 357 ammo thru the 38 pencil barrel (pressure safe??). Mine is a 65-5. I am using a gunsmith who picks up/drops off work from my local gunshop. Brownells was showing the LS shrouded 3" barrel out of stock last time I checked back, as I was thinking about hoarding a second one for possible future use myself.
EDIT: DrDremel, tried to send you email with specs on gunshop/gunsmith location but got bounced back.

I think a K-frame 357 with a slim 4" barrel would be super-slick. Anyone have pictures?

Okie John

Great project. I sure love 3" S&W's and the 65 is one of the sweetest... mine is a plain jane, but a great shooter!

(yes, great care was taken to be safe during this photo shoot!)

My e-mail was wrong. It was changed and I forgot to update it here. Try again. If the barrels are gone, I'm going to have to find one somewhere.

The email in your profile today is the one I used and didn't work. Hit me up if you want the info.

How is your project coming?

Did you find a suitable holster? If so Where?

I plan on using a Galco holster, probably a Fletch or Speedmaster.

any news on the project... i've been waiting a while to see how this one turned out...

It's been about 3 weeks, haven't heard back that gun is done yet. The gunsmith told me he had alot of work backed up and I told him there was no rush, so I was going to give it another week before I called to check up. He said he wasn't sure where his revolver barrel tools were since he doesn't do much revolver work anymore.

I can do the hammer bob myself, I'm about half finished with one on my 2" M64 (cut, needs more filing smooth/even and polishing). I haven't decided if I'm going to do it to the 3" M65 yet.

Wow... not very encouraging news for you.

As for the wait time, 3 weeks is nothing compared to the over 1 year I waited for my custom 3" 581. It was very well worth the wait, however!

I'm sure he knows what he's doing, he's fixed a couple of minor revolver problems for me before. He mentioned something about he used to do alot of revover barrel swaps for PPC and Bowling Pin guns years ago, but nothing much recently so he had the tools packed away "somewhere".

Update. Called the gunsmith yesterday after I pulled out my work order and saw he's had it over 2 months now. Apparently he could not find his frame and/or barrel wrench and had to order new ones and has been waiting on them to arrive. He had a few week vacation in there somewhere too. He says he has the tools now and it will be done this weekend or early next week.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing my self, except get a tritium front sight dovetailed in, bob the hammer and get the hole thing bead blasted. Going to the gun show this weekend hopefully find a police trade in for a specimen.

D1911... here ya go

Started out for me as a plain, relatively tired 4" 581. Mark shortened the barrel to 3", recrowned (what beautiful work! my god), beveled the cylinder edges, created the new front sight (error on the labeling... its a gold bead front sight, not brass), rounded off the butt from square, gave it a sublime action job, and refinished in deep blue.
