I am 72 years old and have had some dental work done in recent months. Going through a tooth implant process and yesterday I had two wisdom teeth extracted. My Oral Surgeon is a super nice guy and a great surgeon. He is a US Naval Academy graduate, played football there, spent 20 years in service as a dentist/surgeon retiring as Lt. Commander. Very fortunate to have such a medical professional. Go Navy!

I came from a poor family that only went to the dentist when you were in extreme pain and had to have a tooth pulled. When I went into the Navy they fixed my problems. My first appointment, the dentist told me that I was his first patient, to which I responded, "Today?" Nope, first patient... For years afterwords dentist would openly admire the work that he had done.

My wife had an appointment yesterday and she needs a root canal and a crown replaced. The Root canal is going to cost $3,500.00... Not bad money for a half hour's work.

Wife recently had a root canal. She is terrified of the numbing shots and pain. They gave her pills to take. One the night before and two an hour before. I drove her and took her home afterwards. She doesn't remember a thing. Hope it goes well for her.

Our first dentist in San Antonio was a great guy and did good work. After about 10 years with him, he gave up his civilian practice and became an Army civilian dentist at Fort Sam Houston. He just got tired of putting up with the hassle and expense of running a private practice. I think medical and dental professionals who work as civilians for the military have a special salary category and schedule which is fairly generous, plus they don't have to worry about all the expenses of running an office, malpractice lawsuits, etc., and they get all of the other civil service benefits included.

My first root canal costs me $75 at a local Dentist. I do believe it was in 1963.

My dentist is a Navy vet also. Got his start as a medical corpsman on a sub. They were on a covert mission tapping phone lines upriver in the Soviet Union. Skipper had an inflamed abscessed tooth. He asked "did you ever do any tooth extractions in school?"

"No Sir".

"Well" the skipper said, "you better read up on it, because unless this tooth is out before the second dog watch you will NEVER make Chief!"

The deed was done and Corpsman Morgan made Chief when they returned to home port.

When we lived in Maryland long ago, our dentist was also an ex-Navy man during the Korean War. Except he had been an aviation machinist's mate. He went to dental school after he left the Navy.

My dentist retired, and closed his practice, this pass Monday. I've been going to him for over 30 years or so. Active duty Navy, then Navy reserves where we first met. A good man, a good dentist. I will miss Charley ………
