So my Mom, a former CPS worker, used to have a Mod 10-5 Nickel snubbie in her car. She left it in there for years. She bought it used and I mean then it was well used. Nickel plating was chipping off everywhere. The front of the cylinder, the muzzle, edges of the frame and other spots. It had pitting on it, especially under the grips. It also had a fair amount of surface rust.
I told my parents that I had a single stack S&W, a 908 that I would trade them for it. My Dad jumped on the deal.
So I got it home, stripped it down. I lightly blasted the frame, cylinder, side plate, ejector rod, crane and screws. I then used 2000 grit sand paper to remove some of the pitting, then lightly re-blasted it.
I bought a NOS thumb latch from Numrich because someone had tried to do a "carry melt" job on it. I then heated up the parts and applied Norrell's Moly Resin black. I cured it then applied Norrell's clear.
I wish I had taken pictures of it before, but I have a tendency to jump right into a project.
I called any place I could to get a quote on either stripping the nickel and bluing it, or putting a new nickel finish on it. The cost was 3-4 times what the pistol is worth. I had even though about Robar, but again it was just to costly.
I'm happy how it turned out. Maybe sometime in the future I might send it off, who knows.
