My RHKP M-10 and a funny story

Hi all, there I was in a local pusher's establishment last fall, just minding my own buisness mind you and I happend to spy a M-10 with a lanyard ring in the used hangun shelf. Asked to look at it and the young man handed it over. Had a price tag of $275.00 on it and was a M-10-7 with the Royal Hong Kong Police and number stamped on the back strap. Was in decent shape, good timeing and lock up, it was carried and had a bit of blueing wear here and there, but they had me, was about to say I'll take it when the young counter clerk noticed me looking at the grip strap stamping's. He said since someone stamped thier initials on the backstrap I could have it for $200.00. Now this shop deals mostly with the polymer rat-a-tat type of firearms and I dont think anyone knew what it was. I told the nice man that would do and I would take it. Had it out to the range today and took her along with some other .38 special's, she shoot's real nice. Oh by the way, I am not looking down my nose at the rat-a-tat folk, I own a few myself!

Nice 10-7 RHKP! Congratulations on getting it and for such a great price. I have one similar . . . an AYRXXXX serial number and 4 digit backstrap RHKP number . . . only mine is missing the lanyard ring . . . the hole is there but the ring has been removed.

I note that the lanyard on yours is round . . . that's the first one I've seen. Do you or anyone else know if all RHKP models were equipped with the round lanyard ring . . . and whether this was provided by S&W or the RHKP?

I also enjoy the smooth combat trigger on mine . . . is yours the same?

I had a 10-7 rhkp with the same round lanyard ring. I think the rings were factory mounted. I believe the 10-7's are in such great shape because the police transitioned to autos shortly after the 10's were issued.

My dealer has one with the ring and the stamp and it's a lot more that $275.

Hey Russ, I think all the RHKP's had the round lanyard ring and mine has the smooth trigger. I prefer the smooth trigger for DA work and this one works out right nice.

Thanks for the response . . . and, again, nice find. I also prefer the smooth trigger for DA. Will keep my eye out for one of those round lanyard rings . . . probably won't put in on but it'll make the package complete.

Ok, here's my funny story of my acquiring a RHKP revolver:

In 2006, my wife and I moved near Winchester, Virginia, and I started attending the many small gun shows in the Shenandoah Valley, Winchester, Woodstock, Harrisonburg, and taking in the Nations Gun Show in Dulles. I attended a show at the National Gaurd Armory in Woodstock, and bought a nice 2" Model 64, surplus from the California Department of Corrections. On my way out of the show, I spied a 4" Model 10-7, marked "RHKP 9332" on the back strap. Asking price was $250. I gave it the once over, in the dim light of the Armory the finish looked worn in places, but still nice. I took a card from the dealer, and went home to think about it.

A week or so went by, and I though harder and harder about that revolver. In my minds eye, the finish got better and better, until I convinced myself it must be a 95% gun or better, and I'd better make a move on it before someone else got it. I called up the dealer, paid for it over the phone with a credit card, and made arrrangements to pick up the gun at the next show, several weeks later at the Harrisonburg show.

When I picked it up at the well lit fairground hall, the finish was no where near what I remembered. It was quite worn, with dark grips, many scratches and lots of holster wear. It was the same revolver, but my desire had improved it in my mind. I was happy to find it was one of the best shooting revolvers I have ever owned, I shoot it in IPSC and IDPA matches, and won a second place trophy at a PPC match with it.

It also sent me on a quest for other RHKP guns and gear. Here's a pic with an original RHKP holster and lanyard, police whistle and patch.

One reason the lanyard ring is so big on these revolvers is the RHKP lanyards are quite thick, and wouldn't fit through a lanyard ring like those found on Victory Models or 1917 revolvers.

The other pic is of it's more pristine brother, an RHKP "Customs and Excise Branch" 10-7, marked "C&E 1830" on the back strap.

Hey Canoeguy, thats why I like a service revolver, a little wear and tear add's to it's charm and you know it was out there with it's officer of the law fighting evil! Besides they both look right purdy to me.

...this morning i told my wife about the RHKP i saw yesterday...the price is tempting, i told her that 10-5 is my 1st love before her;-) ...she wished that someone will give me that 10-5 as a birthday gift for me=)
...im thinking of selling my m36 and buy the 10-5?? what do you think guys? am i really sick?? =))

Get the 10-5, you won't regret it.

If you do a lot of shooting, the 10-5 will be more accurate and easier to shoot than the Model 36. If you only carry for self defense, and rarely shoot your revolver, the Model 36 may be a better choice.

Best scenario, keep the Model 36 and get the Model 10 as well, the wife will get over it after a while.....
