Until recently I’ve had no desire to have a modern sporting rifle. I tried a friend’s arsomething this past year, and having just gotten a pacemaker, I found it difficult and uncomfortable to shoot. I only fired a few rounds before giving it back. To tell the truth I’ve always been a little intimidated by them.
So just before the first of the year, I saw Smith had a rebate on optics, so I bought the Response, thinking I could handle 9mm. I haven’t fired it yet but I have been handling it and working on it until now I feel comfortable with it. So my original idea was to put a sling on it but really didn’t understand all the attachments and the gun show vendors were not much help and neither were the gun shops. So YouTube videos and Amazon shopping have taught me a lot. I then decided I wanted to hang accessories off of it like a Christmas tree.

I put the red dot optic on it, then I made my Amazon order. I got the two point sling with qd swivels. Flip up sights in case the optic dies. A 1500 lumen Olight with a pressure switch. A 10 pack of pic rails and a fore grip that didn’t work out. Then my bipod came in Friday. Yesterday I went to a show in Doswell and found a combo foregrip, flashlight and laser.

Don’t take this seriously with all this stuff hanging on it. I’m thinking I need a case catcher and a flash suppressor in case I’m on a recon mission.Any more suggestions from anyone? I need to research the stock end next. I’ll give a range report if I ever shoot it.

9mm is no joke. It’ll blow the lungs right out of the body……… I enjoy shoot my original Ruger Police Carbine in 9mm. Very accurate and no recoil. I think you’ll enjoy your new toy. As a side note. A hunting buddy with a pacemaker and defibrillator shot his 30/30 with no problem

Do you shoot left handed? Is that why it was uncomfortable to you?
No, I’m right handed but I was about 3 months out of getting a pacemaker. I’ve tried my 870 since then and didn’t care for the recoil with a 2 3/4” 00. I still shoot my handguns as they don’t bother me. Now that I think about your question, the pacemaker is on the left side, the gun on the right. But it still bothered me.

Enjoy yourself. Try all the accessories you want. Most of the people who poo poo accessories on an AR15 only came to that conclusion after trying a bunch. It is part of the fun, like swapping grips on your Smith & Wesson revolvers.

I built one in 9mm
It took a bit of learning to tune it up to run reliability.
Once you get the ejector and buffer tweaked,
(Odin heavy adjustable), get a modestly powered mil dot variable scope on it.
Once you try it at various ranges, you'll see the genius of the optic choice.
It makes the necessary hold compensation fast and easy

You typically want your red dot located in the more frontal position on the receiver. Your rear flip up sight then should be behind it, and be able to have your iron sights co-witness with your red dot. Keep the rear sight to the back part of the receiver, making sure it doesn't affect using your charging handle.

Like a few others have said already, you need to move the RDS as far forward on the upper as it will go. Actually, if you reverse the positions of the RDS and the BUIS you'll be good. Your BUIS is also 180* backwards, so fix that while you're at it.

I had no experience with ARs until about 2000. My department's training was not very good and I sucked. I then met Pat Rogers and started going to his classes, which made a big difference. For almost all personal uses, it would be my go to. This is especially true now that I have broken my shoulder and had ugly surgery. I am reasonably sure my 12 gauge days are over, despite what the platform can do.

I have a Wilson AR9G in addition to my BCMs, and it is set up as much the same as I can (Aimpoint, Surefire 1K light, etc). It was not really a good fiscal choice, but I have a nice bunch of Glock mags. I have just taken delivery on a Ruger/Marlin .357 lever gun that I need to finish setting up and test when cleared; it seems very practical to me as a travel platform. Objectively, the ARs are better, but so many states have silly laws and political views that a lever gun is a good choice for the purpose, and a .357 rifle is pretty much certain to be adequate for any use I would make.

I can attest to the validity of the theory.
I have a Henry to bridge the political divide. 357 in a rifle or carbine is a bit of a sleeper.
9 doesn't get all of the same boost as 357, but it too climbs the energy ladder by a few rungs.
9 becomes a little interesting in the platform.
Last outting I was dialing in loads for it and chewing through some blammo ammo.
I have it zeroed for 100 with a mil dot LPVO.
It took almost no time to find what dot to hold on at 25, 50, and 200.
I'd grab it over the 22 for small game

I put the sight backwards so I could go closer to the RDS and it still fold down. Not knowing what I was doing, I assumed looking through the optic at the sight was better than looking vice vs. The red dot lines up with the two sights. But I am willing to try the other way. Thanks for the advice.
