One of the large caliber rifles in my safe, and my favorite one to shoot, is this Uberti 1885 Highwall chambered in 45-70.
I had the red Uberti finish stripped off the furniture and refinished with a red walnut oil that really brought out the grain.
The vernier rear sight is great if you're shooting 200 yards or more but under that the stock buckhorn sight works fine and I replaced the original front blade sight with a green fiber optic that's easier for my old eyes to pick up.
My other large caliber rifle is a 1943 Remington 1903A3 chambered in 30-06. It's all original, I even have to correct bayonet for it, except for the front sight blade.
I replaced the original, which was bent, with a USMC blade. It's taller which lowers the 0 point a bit but twice as wide as the original which makes it much easier to pick up, especially in low light conditions.

That refinish job looks great! Do you hand-load the rounds for it? Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. It did come out nice didn't it? A local guy that does antique furniture restorations did it for me.
I handload for all my firearms except 22lr and 32acp. It doesn't save me as much money as it used to but the main benefit for me has always been the ability to tailor my rounds to what I intend to use them for.
