I sent the GOA letter before the vote...got this back today:

Thank you for contacting me to express your views on gun control legislation. It is an honor to serve as your Senator, and I appreciate hearing your views on this important issue.

I understand that many Oregonians cherish their second amendment rights, and I support the ability of law abiding gun owners to own and use firearms. At the same time, however, I believe that we must protect our children and ensure that deadly weapons do not fall into the hands of criminals. For this reason, I support common sense measures that help keep our communities safe including mandatory background checks and closing the gun show loophole that permits unlicensed private vendors to sell privately-owned guns at gun shows without background checks.

I will continue to stand for sportsmen and law abiding citizens, and protect their constitutional right to bear arms.

Thank you, again, for sharing your thoughts with me, and please continue to keep me informed about issues that concern you.

All my best,

Jeff Merkley
United States Senate

Here's my follow up:

(someone please come bail me out)

Senator Merkley:

re your comment: "I understand that many Oregonians cherish their second amendment rights, and I support the ability of law abiding gun owners to own and use firearms. Please advise on how you connect the "Reciprocity" law for those already licensed and cleared via background checks, with your statement quoted above.

Criminals by definition are not the ones seeking legal concealed carry beyond their home state. Criminals by definition are not the ones who are paying attention to whatever laws are on the books.

"Mandatory background checks" are exactly what those licensed to carry have passed on both federal as well as state agency levels.

Isn't is a good idea that law-abiding citizens have the same 'right to carry' as those criminals who ignore state and federal laws?

Please advise.

Outstanding response. I hope he pays attention.

More than likely he will never see it. An assistant will read it, make a mark on a tally board or book keeping track of pro/con communications, and send another computer generated canned response.

Both my Senators voted in favor of the bill.

This is a gun grabber just waiting for the right legislation and reason to slam the door on private gun ownership. These words are right out of oBAMA's script.

Your best bet is to campaign for this fellow's opponent in the next erection.

Don't let a single vote by a Senator convince you that they're on our side. Read this article from the Washington Post LINK

Even for someone as skeptical of these rascals as I am, this was an eye opener.

Indiana Senators

Bayh (D) voted in favor of the bill.
Lugar (R) - presumed, voted against it.

I sent email contact to both asking for their support, and mentioning that I would pleased to see that they supported it. Clearly, I am not pleased with Lugar. It seems to me that he has torpedoed pro-2A legislation in the past.

It turns out that there was a majority in favor - 58 votes - falling 2 votes short ofthe 60 it needed to pass. Exactly 2 presumed republicans voted against it. My pal Lugar, and senator Voinovich of OH.

Does anyone in IN know of republican candidates who might oppose Lugar in his next primary run? In my current mood I would volunteer my time to them.

Wretched

Your senator forgot to mention that the economic recovery depended on defeating the reciprocity amendment.
That seems to be the new justification for every program since "for the children" has somewhat ceased to work its magic.

Senators vote

I called Lugars Indy office as soon as they posted his vote and told one of his ades that he had just lost one of his
supporters and would not support him any more and would
help any of his opponents. he has forgotten the people of Ind.
It time for him to come home.

“I support COMMON SENSE MEASURES that help keep our communities safe...........”
As soon as you hear those words, brace yourself, you are in the presence of “The Anointed One, B.H. Obama” for those are his exact words and he, not we, is in charge of the definition of common sense.
The Honorable Senator from Oregon is just following the party line. If you don’t expect much from Democrats you will not be disappointed.

M657, you were too kind. I can't believe you responsded to that demented ........... , well, you know what I mean.

He didn't deserve that kind of reply.

You are a better man than me. I would have told him exactly what kind of low life he really is.

It is nice to live in a State where you can depend on your Senators and Representatives(even the one Democrat on important issues) to listen to the people. The people spoke with authority when Obama lost in every one of our 77 counties.

I'm with you on this, my sentiments exactly.

Southern Indiana.

In Arizona, both Sen. Kyl and Sen. McCain voted for the bill. It's amazing to me that 58 votes in the Senate still didn't cut it. Requiring 60 votes to pass was a bit of under-the-table maneuvering that I just don't understand. I think the Demos counted their votes in advance and figured they had enough against it to push the 60 vote B.S. Now after the next election, when we throw these tax, spend, & gun control bums out on their collective ears, we'll be back. And now that people are beginning to wise up that Obama is bankrupting the country, we'll have a new President to sign the bill, and Mr. O can go back to Kenya where he was in all probability born.

In NJ, Lautenberg & Menendez were both "no", of course. It's NJ, so what would you expect?
Besides they're both busy writing more anti-gun legislation, and in Menendez's case, hoping the FBI doesn't pick him up along with all of those other Hudson County crooks.

Term limits. Lets return the power to the ordinary people instead of professional politicians. Two terms and you are out!
