My Son Made Eagle Scout And I Carried On A Tradition(New Photo Added)

Over many years it has been my pleasure to watch Edward grow into the fine young man he has become...

His father and I are dear friends and we have mixed our families together. Both of us are single parents, raising sons by ourselves.

Edward's achievements are the hallmark of Bruce's commitment, untold sacrifices, thankless toil and thoughtful, solid fatherly guidance. I have no greater respect for anyone on this planet than Bruce.

Edward! Your Uncles and I Salute You! :)

Congratulations to an accomplished young man! Being an Eagle Scout will prepare him for many things in life. I got mine in 1962, my Son got his in 1985, he is now a civil engineer, and an Army Lt Col serving as a battalion commander. My Grand-son just got his First Class this month and is well on his way.

Thank you all for the kind and generous comments. Ed is a treasure to not only me but I believe this countries future.

But let me add why this accomplishment was even harder. Ed's Mother and I divorced 7 years ago. To say she has problems is an understatement. But this thread is not about her. I have full custody of Ed with her having very limited visitation. Most of us know how hard that is to get especially in a Commonwealth state. This came from years of mental and physical abuse to Ed. She was at his Court of Honor but has not assisted in one single thing he has done in Scouting.

After the divorce I was striped financially. But I built myself back up. With it along the way the only important thing to me has been Ed. So basically I have seen to it his life is as normal as it can be. But going it without a Mother's love and understanding has been rough. I have had to be both.

But the future is his. This summer he will be attending two summer camps. One is a high adventure camp that has a Ranger School challenge. The other is a leadership course specializing in the patrol method. Next year he wants to go JROTC in high school.

Ed has earned 37 merit badges, camped out fifty-four nights, accomplished sixty-eight hours of community service and hiked fifty one miles. Attended Bear Claw Leadership Training in 2013 then served on the Staff in 2014. The Eagle Project was 236 hours that had to be coordinated with multiple contractors, agencies for permits and supervising the Scouts and adults building it.

Most of this was accomplished before he reached the age of 13. Yes, he just turned 13 in August. Because of all of the above Ed is extremely mature for his age. Most mistake him for 16 or 17. He also stands 6ft 2in and weighs close to 200 pounds.

He has a heart of gold and a temperament to match. Very patient, understanding and level headed. Loves math and history and knows how to employ each in problem solving.

Forgive me for being so long winded in a response. I had no idea we would get the thumbs up and responses. I just wanted everyone to learn more about him. Oh and Vigil617 Ed looked at the Coast Guard Academy website this am and the interest is there.

Thanks again to all of you.

Most awesome! Please congratulate your son for his dedication and perserverance. Only 4% of the boys who begin Scouting obtain the rank of Eagle. My Eagle Court of Honor was in February, 1979, and my son's was last month. (nice pistol, too).

Congratulations dad. I know men in their 90's that are still proud of making Eagle, and rightly so. If you don't get it by 18 you never will.

Bruce, that's really great to hear! I'm not an Academy man myself -- I got my degree at a public university and then applied to OCS a couple of years later, and being an Eagle Scout was a huge boost to my application -- but I can tell you and Ed in all sincerity that some of the finest young men and officers I have ever known were products of the Coast Guard Academy. The opportunities there are very special, including the chance to make summer cruises on the cutter Eagle, and upon graduation and commissioning, to serve in an elite officer corps in the Coast Guard. As an Eagle Scout, he has already joined an elite group of young men, and I think he would find service as a Coast Guard officer to be very rewarding. Whatever he does, though, I'm sure he will be a rousing success. Congratulations again!

Happy (belated) Fathers Day BruceHMX and Sebago Son!
I hope young Edward is doing well.
