My son says I need an AR. My question...why?

Mid sixties age wise, and never really looked at the AR style rifles until last year, when a friend purchased one. I picked up one myself, and now it's a favorite. I made it a point to drive to the desert many times last year, for long range target shooting, and look forward to this year.
Well... if your no fan of the .223
there is allways the .50 Beowulf

I'm in the same boat you are. My adult kids think I need an AR too. However, after reading all of the posts here, many with excellent arguments pro and con, I'm still not convinced that I need to run out and buy one, just because I can.

...... and lots of things in life I didn't think I would like I later found out differently once I tried it.
I've even seen guys on this Forum say they see no reason for a suppressor on a gun.

I don't think you need an AR unless you want one.
Try one out. If you like it, buy one. If not, don't.
I think it is a good idea for everyone to have at least one modern pattern rifle capable of utilizing 30 round magazines.

The cost effective S&W 15-22 trainer...
After spending $1,000 on a decent AR15, $700 on a quality optic, $250 on a nice trigger and $600 for a couple thousand rounds... you'll be ready to go to the range. But when the Visa bill comes due you might start thinking it's time to ease up on gun expenses. Enter the 15-22.
About six years ago I was flipping through a gun rag while Kiefer Sutherland was hunting down terrorists on TV and the dog was snoozing on my lap... just a typical evening at ChattanoogaPhil's. But then it happened... a full page ad for the new S&W 15-22! I hollered to the wife "check this out". With a disinterested but accommodating smile she looked at the ad. "What do you want that for?" Of course I launched into all the money savings there would be shooting .22 instead of just 5.56. With an eyeroll and dripping sarcasm she replied "So you're going to buy yet another gun to save money?" then hands back the gun rag. End of conversation, she knows I'm buying it.
The next day I'm at the gun store buying a $500 15-22. The 15-22 had just been released and didn't even have the threaded barrel version. That cost me another $50 to have done. A cheap $100 red dot, $100 folding sights, $600 can with tax stamp and two cases of CCI SV for only $250 each at the time. Less than $2,000 later I was ready to start saving money shooting .22.
Curious thing... my 5.56 consumption didn't slow down. However, my .22 consumption increased 10x.

When the authors of the US Constitution said the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, my sense is their intent was that government shouldn't reserve for itself a level of arms that was greater than what the citizenry would be allowed to own. So if the rifle of choice for government to supply its agents with is AR-15's, I think we owe it to ourselves to maintain the parity that our forefathers intended. Each of us should own an AR-15.
I agree. Looking for a source for a LAWS, a minigun, and a mortar . . .

A few years ago Maryland's governor Matrin O'malley decided to outlaw the evil black guns.
Until then I never thought about an AR15 but had to get one because Maryland liberal democrats said I couldn't.
Bought a Colt HBAR AR15 (5.56) and put an Aimpoint red dot on it. Turns out I really like it and enjoy shooting at the range. More of a "fun" shoot compared to the target shooting with a scoped bolt action rifle.
Also I can see where an AR15 would be very effective perimeter home defense for those thar can't handle the recoil of a shotgun.
I bought one and am very glad I did.
Until then I never thought about an AR15 but had to get one because Maryland liberal democrats said I couldn't.

Have a few AR's. And, like most here, IMO, they're OK.
My favorite? - a Oly Arms 9mm carbine. It's the most fun.
After retiring from LE in '08, have worked at two different busy LGS's through two of the 'panic buying' episodes.
I can tell one and all - that is not any fun at all. Seeing customers in that state and literally throwing money around for stuff makes you question humanity.
The last place I worked was very 'AR - centric' and you had to speak fluent AR about all accessories, modifications, discuss piston vs. direct impingement, understand 3-gun requirements, optics from house-clearing to varmint to competition, wax poetic about barrel twist rates and powder burn rates, best lowers, help on builds, etc, ad nauseum.
I'll confess to total burnout. Basically, I got sick of it.
So, I'll keep my few AR's. They all outshoot the couple of Mini 14's I've had over the years.
Still enjoy shooting short .357 and .45 Colt leverguns much more.

Sorry, can't help you. "Why" is my question too. IMO they're ugly, and I like nice looking rifles. My levers will do me fine and again IMO anyone who thinks they're going to give them some sort of adavantage against some scary gov. or other foe, is dreaming.

I don't have a problem with folks owning AR's and I don't have anything against them, I just don't particularly have a reason to get one myself. I admit, both Bill Clinton and Barak Obama have certainly tempted me to go get one "before it's too late", but I have a enough M1 carbines and .30 carbine ammo to outfit a squad or two so I think I'm good in that category.

You can buy all the pieces and put it together your self, of course you'll need a couple of specialized tools. Or buy a bare lower and parts and a completed upper. The latter is how I did my 6.5 Grendel.
My son now has the tools and has built 4 from pieces. So my next one will be pieces and the upper parts dropped off at his house.
My next one will be a 16" bbl lightweight one built on the M-4 platform. This will be my knock around and truck gun.
Sad as it is some of us old school guys from the land of walnut and blue steel get to play with one it is nice. Sort of like when younger and all one dated was brunettes, a date with a real blonde or red head might get the heart pumping as will an AR.

Now you guys got me thinking about one. And only recently decided the 1911 isn't just a fad.
I'm not into the AR pLatform like some I know who have 10/different ones set up different ways but i do believe the carbine and cartridge combo is the best set up for home defense and in case of civil unrest and hordes of looters. I plan to get one on la as quick as I can
