I remember growing up on the farm and leaving the keys in the ignition at all times. That stopped in the mid-1980's, and now I lock it even at a gas station when I'm filling up.

Man, has times sure changed, and will only get worse.

I empathize

My wife And I came out of the local theater-it's dark-and my jeep had been broken into-the radio face had been taken off and thrown down on the floor. We know the local law enforcement-the officer said the guy was lucky my wife and I didn't come up on him-we're pretty crippled up-A threat to my wife would have resulted in a tragic result. They caught the guy-the theater has a camera in the parking lot.

I spent my life working security, yet my wife is far more security concious than me. Yesterday we went with a ATV club for a ride in the mountains. We hit high snow and many were stuck. I got past them and scounted ahead a mile and got hopesly hung up too. We got off and was working on it awhile, then was starting to walk back for help and theresa says, did I take the keys?

I have a house for sale, its been mostly vacant since I moved here. Last week someone stole the refrigerator! Took their time, backed in the garage, took the door off the hinges..

Looks like a realtor showed the place and left it open or maybe one of her clients left it open for themselves?

Getting ripped off sends me into wild fantasies of vigilante justice.

Even when they are locked bad things happen....My Jeep Grand Cherokee was stolen from Billings Montana on very early Sat. AM....Jeep was locked and I have the keys. Wyoming State Police found it later in the day about 50 miles south of Casper. Out of fuel I think. When they stole it there was only enough gas to go about 10 miles. They fueled it up and it will go about 380 mile until empty. 50 miles south of Casper Wyoming is 380 south of Billings.
I get to do a road trip tomorrow to retrieve it. Will se what kind of damage I am looking at.

A nice CB might bring $39 new. A used CB can be had in pawn shops for less than $15.

Why would someone want to risk jail time, being shot or such over a CB?

Makes you wonder about the human race. A few years back I was on a grand jury for several months. We handled a number of auto theft case involving rings. Guys would steal a new Escalade, sell it for $400. Next day, same thing. This business model relies on someone being there many times a year to buy your stuff. Eventually that someone is a cop. The risk-reward relationship in that business is so insanely tilted against success you wonder how people are stupid enough to try it. But there is no shortage of entrepreneurs in that area. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

Someone must have needed that cb for next year's deer season.*s* But realistically, he probably didn't even know what it was.

This is why I keep a Taurus 82 in my car when I have to leave a gun in there, like Monday to Friday, because I can't carry at work and have to leave my gun in the locked center console, which can just be pried open anyway.......if someone breaks in I won't lose a "real" gun:)

Taurus has a use, and it's guns that will go bang a few times in an emergency, but you won't shed a tear when you find your window broken out and the gun gone......

Except that puts another gun on the street in the hands of a criminal - maybe to commit armed robbery or even murder.

No question at all. This is the drug effect on the human mind. All rationale goes out the window. Things will never change in this country until we clean up the drugs and I don't see that as happening as there is too much money in it for all including the government.

If there's a truck stop nearby, it could just be a way to pick up extra cash via theft, and a ready mkt..

What percentage of thefts, robberies and burgularys are to finance drugs? I dont know, but I would bet it is around 90%? Then there is just the type people that will steal everything not nailed down.
My answer to it all would get me thrown off the site. Being PC is this countrys biggest problem.

Well, not quite. You can buy one for $39, but it's not much of a radio. The standard of the industry, the Cobra 29, comes in several variations, retailing for $99 to $170 or so. I have a $500 radio. I bought it used for much less, but that's what someone paid for it new. A used 29 will usually bring $60 or so in a truck stop parking lot. You may be right that some pawn shops wouldn't give much for one, but they all sure seem to want new retail prices when they sell them. And can't you get a crack rock for $15?

who ever stole my radio left a pair of berkley sunglasses behind

I have a 148GTL only cause I like SSB. I believe I paid $180 for it stock/new 15 yrs ago. In '78 my peaked and high freaked President Grant was stolen. Cost to me was minimum $375 in '78 dollars.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for your kind thoughts I really appreciate them. I returned from Casper Monday evening without my faithful Jeep. It did not run out of gas but rather was run out of oil and it destroyed the motor. When I opened the hood and saw that the serpantine belt was off the pulleys and not broken I became suspicious. I got the belt back on properly and then tried to start it and heard the sickening sound of metal against bare metal. The dip stick was pulled and there was NO oil on it at all and the very end had alot of metal shavings.

The interesting thing is that the perp left behind an envelope with a number of court documents, several letters from his mom with her name, address and phone number as well as a number of other folks. Seems he just got out of prison in later Feb. of this year for his third DUI.

Billings PD will get this new information Tuesday AM. I am surprised that Casper PD did not notice this when they processed everything.

Won't however revive my Jeep. Felt sort of like the cowboy that had to shoot his loyal horse after breaking it's leg....Will keep you posted on the outcome of this saga in my life.

Randy

Sorry to hear the news, that's lousy... I'm not very surprised that the local PD did not notice the folder full of the perp's identification, as it seems that auto theft, any theft really, is just kind of pushed aside these days. You are told to make out a report, but this is not for some big investigation, but so that you have something for back-up when filing your insurance claim. I'm sure you'll hear that this is because there are so many other pressing issues, and such limited resources, and that is very true, but I just think it's a shame that honest, hard working people get taken advantage of by scum that, so often, just keep on going to the next victim.

If you think about it, the way it works, is that our private insurance coverage system is just another social welfare system, only for criminal dependents... Good guy/employed person buys insurance to 'protect' their stuff, bad guys steal your insured stuff to sell for money and/or drugs, good guy/employed person gets 'paid' by insurance company for lost stuff, insurance company raises rates to keep making huge profits. It's a back-door way of supporting criminals/druggies, with 'taxpayer' (working people's) money; what a system!

I think it's ironic that you brought up the horse analogy, because in the old days, if you stole someone's horse you would likely get hanged. Now, you steal someone's car, and nobody cares... It's actually good business for the insurance companies (they just raise rates, where needed), auto body shops, radio manufacturers, tow companies, etc...

Anyway, rant off, and sorry again for your troubles.

We have had a number of car burglaries here in the past few months. In each case the vehicle was unlocked and the items stolen were in plain view. The thieves appear to go around neighborhoods between 2 and 4 AM just checking to see if vehicles are unlocked.

We had kids here in my town checking for unlocked cars and stealing, in some cases, less than a dollar's worth of pennies and nickels in people's drink holders and the largest ticket item they got was a GPS valued at $40.

Like was said above, I'll refrain from making comments that would get me banned, but we have a different kind of "people" moving into our area, coming out of more urban areas. The older folks who live here need to change their "we never lock our doors here" mentality.
