My two J Frames -- Retirement Before Deployment

I don't know, some guy pointing a gun at me at ten yards is a threat but at 25 isn't?

The textbook theoretical gunfighting aspirants don't believe self defense shooting occurs beyond a very short distance. When I go to the range, I seldom see them shooting beyond the "long range" ten yard targets.

It takes a lot more practice to hit well at 25 yards with a snub revolver.

It can be done, but most people who carry don't want to invest the time.

I will just leave this here. My M649-2, loaded and 5 rounds in a speed strip. My Sig P365XL loaded with 12 rounds in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. It also has Night sights and is optics ready if you choose.
As you can see it actually weights less.

Results would be different with an aluminum frame or Scandium frame revolver.

Iirc, the PD revolvers come in a a little less than 12oz, the AirWeights at a little more than 14oz. My Colt's Cobra weighs 16oz.

I think the alloy J and D frames have their place, like mid summer in the shorts pocket carry.

In the summer I pocket carry an alloy J frame in 32 H&R. Small, light, 6 rounds with decent power

Here you can carry whatever you want however you want most anywhere except federal buildings without a permit

At the risk of triggering the "What If" brigade, this fixation on capacity has always intrigued me. 1) It's personal protection/self defense, not re-fighting the Tet Offensive. 2) If you have to reload, it's no longer self defense, it's a fire fight. If that's the case, you're in deep dreck, regardless what you're packing. And, 3) To quote Clint Smith, "Instead of shooting a lot, try shooting good." Said it before, if I need capacity, I'll take an AR and a bandolier of 30rd mags.

J frame

Sounds like an under-the-table method of disqualifying as many as possible from a constitutional right.

In Pa. , you fill out the form, pay your money, an as long as you pass PICS they take your picture and a few minutes later you're out the door.

When I was a kid, you had to provide info on every gun you MIGHT carry. The info was listed on the back of your license. If you bought something, you visited the Sheriffs Dept again to have it added. That went away years ago, it served no purpose and was a major annoyance.

Good comments, but you probably did trigger the "what if" brigade. They see gunfighting rather than protection/ self defense.

Agree, to a point. My 340PD is a get-off-me gun carried w/one speedstrip reload. I ran out of ammo in the midst of a gunfight during my career and it left an impression. So the center console of my car has a couple of just-in-case speedloaders. I don't carry one of the modern high cap auto loaders b/c I have back & hip issues and they're just too heavy.

If you actually shot someone at 25 yards, I think you would have some 'splaning to do!

73,
Rick
I see this all of the time. I would venture to guess it started by those who haven't honed their marksmanship skills. A good shoot is a good shoot, no matter the distance.

I've qualified with a J frame from 25 yards a number of times in the past. Heck, I may have qualified with a course of fire that required shots from 50 yards but I don't remember that far back as to if we had to do that with off duty/back ups. That said, the average citizen that has a right to carry doesn't need to shoot 25 yards and the circumstances are so remote that they would legitimately need to as to compare their chances of it with their chances of personally discovering gold on Pluto. 15 yards should be plenty. Pretty much any event further than that they have the better option of just going away. So yeah a 25 yard requirement for CCW qualification is just oppressive and designed to restrict rights.

I have small girly hands, and all J-frames just fit me perfectly. In fact, you may see me on other forums as "J-Frame." I love the little buggers. Throw in the Ruger LCR in .38 Spl too. I have an LCR that is amazingly accurate at 7-10 yards when I do my part.

Very hard to go wrong with any J-frame.

I think the 365 series is the modern equivalent of the J's, and I have them as well. Pocket carry an SAS.

To get good with any handgun requires a lot of practice. The lighter the handgun, the less likely to shoot it a lot and get proficient. Last Thursday, I took out my model 60, mostly to adjust the "new to it" CT laser grips. After 50 rounds of wadcutters and 5 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 135 gr. short barrel rounds, I was done. If it had been a 642 lighter revolver, I'd have been done sooner.

Last time I shot the State test for the snubby I shot 25 out of 25 with the 640. I do not trust or like the Sig 365 . Use what you trust and shoot well.

I see the NJ 25 yard qualification as an attempt to eliminate as many applicants as possible. Applicants are forced to choose between a small light short barreled handgun for concealment or a larger heavier longer barreled handgun to aide in qualifying but will be impractical to conceal. They get you coming and going. In many places if this was the standard for a drivers license there would hardly be any cars on the road. And Bushmaster1313 two excellent choices of S&W J frame snubs.
