My wife spotted this peeping tom looking in our bedroom window today. I'm traveling the southland with son # 1 and currently in Nashville. I guess there isn't anything going on in my absence because this fella looks to be so bored he's catching 40 winks.:D

Of course, there ain't much more action when I'm there!:(

EDIT: That is a Northern Flicker.

That's a beautiful little bird. I have never seen one of those in Indiana but I am going to be watching, now that I know what they look like. Thanks for that. :)

They are in the woodpecker family. Bigger than a bluejay, but smaller than a crow-sized. We have quite a few around. They're on the ground as often as in trees and have a very distinct (woodpecker-ish) flight pattern. One of our prettiest and favorite neighbors! Hope you happen across one soon.:)

That's a "Common Flicker" - beautiful bird.

Sorry, but I'm sticking with adult female Yellow Shafted Northern Flicker. I trust the folks at Cornell Ornithology. Punch in Common Flicker and Northern Flicker shows up!

That's what everyone around here calls 'em!

Same bird. Around here the colloquial name is "Yellowhammer". State bird of Alabama.

Nice to have around until they start pecking on your house!

One of their favorite foods is ants. If they're on your house I'd inspect for carpenter ants.

:DOK, I'll go with Northern Flicker, but I ain't lookin' close enough to see if it's yellow shafted. ;)

Y'all enjoy your trip to the South -- although Nashville is getting pretty close to being Midwest, if you ask me.

My wife was there earlier this month for her daughter's graduation from Austin Peay University (school cheer: "Go Peay!") The downtown area is terrific; try B.B. King's, she said. They also went to the Grand Old Opry and had a ball; lots of good clean fun.

Where does that Northern Flicker keep its Bics, is what I want to know.

Lucky you don't line in my state. They'd have you jailed because it is a rare something or the other while at the same time releasing felons with repeat records.

Neat picture OP. I never saw that bird until about two weeks ago when I caught this one eating ants out front.

We call them "yellowhammers". Several years ago I had several around the house. My house is brick but they would bang on the gutter and I had screen wire under the eaves of my smoke house and they tore holes in the wire and got in the smokehouse. They are a pretty bird but they are an aggravating nuisance to have around the house. Larry

Great shot! We used to have them frequently in our old apple orchard where we used to live, but haven't seen any since we moved back to Utah.

On another subject...Koz, you really have to watch how you word your topic headlines. The first thing that came to my mind was that your wife took a shotgun to someone like this::D
