Recently purchased a bundle of stuff that included this set of N frame presentation grips. Was a bit surprised to discover the cut-out on the right grip panel and was wondering if this was some kind of 1980 (12/80 date with silver washers) option and if so what was the purpose? Seems to be very well done. Thought I would throw it out there and see what you folks think...

That particular version of N-frame presentation targets were installed on commemoratives and special editions with a unique sideplate inscription or roll mark, like the Wagon Train 44-40.

They are especially nice if you have an N-frame with the S&W trademark/ roll mark in the low position on the sideplate. It allows for a full display of the trademark, instead of covering a fair portion of it.

Here's one in a k frame

Does the left side grip have just the football relief like the OP's grips, or is it cutout like the right side?

I ask because all the guns with cut outs on the right side, have cutouts on the left side IIRC.

But with S&W, the main rule is, there are no rules.

While there are factory target grips that have the cut out on both sides, that version came later. The factory made target grips with the football on the left panel and the side plate routing on the right side.

I have examples of each.

Perhaps until they moved the logo on the side plate higher.
