N Frame Round Butt

I just got these grips to replace rubber grips than came on 29-8
Mountain gun. They are S&W factory, marked March 5 90 with stamp and 494 hand written on both. What is correct name for theses “stocks”? Not sure what they came off of.

I believe they were designated as: Combat grips. They are round butt grips and I have those same grips on a three inch 657 from 1986, similar grips on a 629. I have seen them on model 24, 624 and others, usually the short barreled variety but similar grip styles were on longer barreled revolvers later. Those grips command serious prices now.

I think they originated with the 24-3 3” gun in 1984-85. AFAIK yours are the first type, around 1985 they changed slightly with a little more girth and a deeper middle groove. Late ones are flat sided. I also have a set that have a much fatter lower region. I think these differences may be related to whoever manufactured them.

The flat sided morado grips that came on the Classic and DX guns IMO are the worst grips ever produced. If mine did not come on my 5" DX, I would not give anything for a set. Aside from not being comfortable, they drive recoil directly into your wrist. IMO

I shot 29-8 with grips, don’t like them to “fat” for my hands.Back to drawing board, and the rubbers again.

OP, your grips are made of "Goncalo Alves" wood and are OEM "Combat-Grips" from circa 1985' or so... They run about $350 to $400Plus on eBay... Ask me how I know!

I find them very ergonomic for my big mitts, beautiful, and with the right slim-fit gloves soak up recoil nicely into the meat of the palms, wrists, and forearms. They also allow for nice carry as they won't give away, bunch up your "cover garment/shirt" either.

Both OEM Smith's and Culina's versions are very nice for both display/beauty AND shoot well for me and are all I'll have/carry/shoot on an "N-Frame" Revo!

My favorite set I scored from a great member here below on my M24-3 Lew Horton Special in my favorite caliber the beloved .44Special...

Also, the "Flat-Sided" "Combats" made of Pau-Ferro (Bolivian Rose Wood) Combat's shoot very well for me too and carry even a bit better/closer to the side or haunches for me... Also very desirable and run $300+ per set on eBay/other sites as well from my experience. I have an extra set or two sitting in the safe for that next near perfect "N" frame I may come across that may need a set to complete the package.

To each their own, either you love em' or hate em. They have a following and that is a fact. You came across a nice set so enjoy em'...

You've got that right!

I've seen sets of them that were simply in just "good" condition with a nick n' scratch here and there go for $425 plus shipping on eBay somewhat recently... Much less in the lovely "Minty" condition we all wish to come across here of which I think I saw for for $500 Plus.

I also removed them from my 24-3 as they just didn't fit my hand. I "re-made" a pair of no-name finger groove target grips to fit my hand.
