All,
Yesterday (Saturday, 22 October), I worked for the entire day on my recently received custom 27-3, my reunited 627-5 Pro Series and my new-to-me 629-6.
The 27-3 was detailed last year in this forum. Just to sum it up, I bought a neglected six-inch 27-3 (1987 gun) at my local SoCal FFL. Not liking the longer barrels, I set out on a search of a 3-1/2 inch barrel. After several weeks of looking, I found one on ebay for $165.
I sent the entire affair to the S&W factory. Art Bellerose at the factory had to cut the old 'crush-fit' barrel off and refit the barrel and went through her innards as well as "Selmo" rebluing the piece.
Not having it for too long, I sent it off to Amerigun in Michigan with a S&W .227" Gold Bead (made by SDM for S&W) for inclusion onto this hybrid 'FBI Gun'. While her stripped frame was away at Amerigun, I commissioned Tedd Adamovich to make a set of his Skeeter stocks in knurled Walnut. I asked that he make the stocks extend 1/4-inch past the bottom of the grip frame, so it would look proportioned to the 3-1/2 inch barrel. They feel wonderful with the palm swells.
The resultant gun is a special revolver, as I'm reasonably sure there are no similar 27-3's in the world. Perfectly balanced for a short barrel gun...
I was recently reunited with my custom 627-5 that I traded in a moment of weakness last year. I had a chance to re-buy it from the same man I did the Private Party Transfer (PPT) to. I'm glad I did. I'd forgotten how nice of a revolver I made it.
The only issue I didn't like was the trigger. I had Mag-Na-Port perform their awesome Combat Trigger and Mini-Bob Hammer modifications to the piece about two years ago. Unfortunately, the .500" trigger didn't get slimmer. So, yesterday I found a fitable .265" Service Trigger (forged) and set about to radiusing and polishing it for DA work. I spent about 2-hours deleting the serrations and my own facsimile of Mag-Na-Port's Combat Trigger modification. The work was well worth it. Although the trigger pull is a shade under 11 lbs DA (I don't SA my revolvers...), it's quite smooth. The gun has the Cylinder and Slide extended firing pin, so it's 100 percent reliable.
A set of legacy Pachmayr Presentations in the N-Frame Small size make the gun a really nice handling 8-shot revolver. The Trijicon front sight also makes for a decent "house gun". Not as pretty as she could be, but functional to say the least.
After picking up my 629-6 from the Kalifornia Gun Jail later in the day, I set about FLITZ-ing the exterior. I've been working on this gun for the last several weeks, as I purchased it (PPT) from my good friend. I previously took off the .500 Hammer and Trigger and substituted a new .400 Semi-Target (MIM) Hammer and installed a forged .265" Service Trigger that I radiused and polished, like the 627-5's trigger.
I'm after the Nickel 29-2 look. Obviously the "lock" doesn't help, but the finish is akin to a nice 1970s factory Nickel. The re-worked Herretts Troopers that 'Dee' at the factory did several years ago for me were added. They feel great and add a certain amount of 1970s appeal. As you can see, I also added a legacy S&W cylinder latch for a more venerable look.
The 629-5 is a very smooth operating revolver. I guess I got lucky. She feels every bit as smooth as the S&Ws from years past. Her DA pull is 10.5 lbs and is VERY smooth. The cylinder nearly drops out of the frame window when opened. All in all, I'm really pleased at how she came out.
I just wish I could get a reliable source for the ILS delete plug. It seems as though they're in precious short supply.
