I thought I'd do an offshoot of the M28 thread with this little tidbit.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/530103904/m/8621001072

If you own a N frame revolver S221000 through S224000, please respond.

SN.

3 or 4 screw.

Model and variation. (dash number)

Anything else Allen-frame feels will help track down information on the elusive 28-1.

Thanks, all.

The results so far-

S221748 is a 4 screw M29.

S2227xx is a 3 screw 28-2.

jcelect- Thanks for the info. Is it a 27-2, 28-2, something else?

Mrhockey- Oh well. Better luck next time and thanks for playing.

Ignorant question.
What is the difference between the N serial numbers and the S serial numbers.

Got a 29-2 with N320XXX.

Gunny

gunny...Serial numbers beginning with the letter S began after WW II and ended around 1970 when serial numbers with the letter N started. The N serial numbers were started as a result of the Gun Control Act of 1968 that required every firearm to have a unique serial number.

Thanks, jc.

So, somewhere in that 1000 frames, the 4th screw fell off the frame.

Any others in S221700-S222700 range?

Good luck with your braketing effort. It might turn up something positive. From my own search of the 29-1, I have been able to narrow down the possible range of numbers one has been found produced and that is a pretty broad range from S220004 through S230957, effectively, S220XXX-S231XXX. Most fall in the S227-S229XXX range. S220004 is a four screw gun shipped 12/13/62, and all the other model stamped 29-1s are 3 screw variations. S220000 and S220518 are 4 screw Model 29s shipped in the latter part of 1962. Don't give up on a 28-1 being out there somewhere. A 4 screw 29-1 turned up when it was least expected and so can a 28-1 I believe.

PZ, excuse the lack of support, been lurking lately. Working crazy hours.

I thought I'd give this thd. another bump,

My 27-1 is S221428, so that puts a -1 before a mod. 29 . Just like S&W to run a business like that.
Making and selling guns, what a concept.

Lets' see what else pops up in this ser. range.

Like to hear from Giz and D.W., about their Ser.#'s. Steve, you out there??

Here 's that 27-1. a 4 screw.............

S&W often "batched" frames and serial number blocks when making a run of a certain model so it would not be unexpected to find a change implemented earlier on one model than on another. Seems like the Model 29 was always "lagging behind" the other N-frames

.

Per the information in Mr. Jinks' book, the change from the 4-screw to the 3-screw frame for the Model 29 took place at S227149.

While it is outside your requested serial number range I note four-screw Model 27-1 at S220275. Blue with 8 3/8 - inch barrel.
