Has anyone ever heard of the trigger stud breaking on an N frame revolver? I have a model 28-2 (1978) that has fewer than 3000 rounds trough it. It was misfiring when I shot it double action, so I took the side plate off to clean it and the stud fell out. According to the saw-rep guy, this apparently isn't unusual, but my gunsmith has never heard of this happening, nor has any of my shooting buddies. Any information would be helpful.

Yep...same thing happened to my 28-2 (1981 gun) last year. Sent it back to S&W and they installed a new one.

S&W repaired it and I've shot many rounds since. Can't remember the cost.

Give them a call.

So they can fix this without replacing the frame? If so, how do they do it? Pics would help.

Thanks,

Here's a shot of my 28-2 after repair. S&W drilled out the old broken stud, threaded the hole in the frame and screwed in a new one. I was given the option of having them weld and refinish the exposed stud end but I opted for the exposed end as shown. It's a shooter......but a good one.

Thanks to all who responded; apparently this DOES happen, I'm just not sure how. Yes, S & W will replace the broken stud; cost: $90 for the crown stud shown in the pic submitted by dnonac (great pic, by the way; thanks.), or $200 to bring the gun back to new condition. I've already sent the 28 back and opted for the crown stud, and should have it back some time in June.

I have a 1917, the only S&W I've taken the sideplate off of, and the stud on it was almost worn through. I still have it, and would like to have it repaired by someone qualified.

I forgot to mention that S&W also re-faced my forcing cone and did a thorough cleaning on the gun at no additional charge. As I recall, the $90 figure you mentioned was about what I paid. I've been happy with the work. Good luck...

Model 29-2......

Howdy! I have a Mod.29-2 8 3/8 in.bbl.I bought in Nov.1978.Been my fav. ever since.I did have to send it in for repairs though.About a month ago I was shooting and noticed the cylinder wasn't turning!cock it and rotate it by hand it worked. So I took the side plate off and discovered the trigger pin lever was broke! And the bushing it fits in,in the sideplate was egged a little..So I sent it in 3 weeks ago and had't heard a word from them.So i called this morning and was told it will be next week before i get a quote on repair.Said they are 3 weeks behind! wasn't real happy about that.they could e mail a guy and say what's up instead of leave'n ya hanging!!..lol...I MISS MY 29!! Attached pics on the damage.have a great day!So yes it happens I guess,I do not like the 3 week waiting period for a quote though.....:)

While the studs on the 1917s were indeed threaded and staked, I don't know that your gunsmith can do the repair, at least not for what S&W will probably charge. But, you won't know till you ask. S&W's service # is: 800 331-0852, ext. 2905. Good luck!

I broke one on a 29-2 awhile back and a local gun smith drilled it out but did not drill all the way through. Made a pin too long and kept cutting until the side plate would fit. Nothing shows from the outside and I have shot it a couple of thousand times and it works ok. Larry
