I prefer the half under-lug barrel look myself but do have a 586 no dash that I use for testing reloads. It shoots one hole at 25 yards with good ammo. Grant it might be one big hole but all the same shoots well.
My 27-2 seems to have a shorter cylinder than my 686 and 586. The internals seem smoother on the L frame also. I'm not sure what they changed but they don't have the noticeable catch when you release the trigger and the hammer block come up.
A 686 with a half under lug barrel and target grips would be my gun of choice but dont think they made such a gun.
