Reading about Sebago's new grandson (Congrats, grand kids are grand) got me thinking about names for grandfathers. Both my grandfathers were called Papaw, but we pronounced it Pop Paw. My dad was Grandpa. I have a buddy who is G'daddy. When my youngest was expecting she asked me what I wanted to be called. Before I could answer my oldest spoke up and said I should be called "Grumps". What a smart donkey she is. It stuck, now I'm Grumps. What are you and what interesting names for grandfathers have you heard?

I called grandfather "DanDan" (thats how granddaddy came out)

My father is "poppa" to my kids.

I have one grandson that calls me grandpa and another grandson and grandaughter that calls me pawpaw. Either is ok with me. I always called my grandparents grammaw and grandpa.

That's always seemed weird, to me. I know of Gramps, Grampy, Grampa, Papa, Pap, Pop-Pop, Paw Paw and Pe-Paw. My father-in-law was Pappy. And don't forget Gram, Granny, Nang, Nana, Me-Maw, Maw-Maw, etc. I, on the other hand, had "Grandma and Grandpa (Mama's last name)" and "Grandma and Grandpa (Daddy's last name)". When my daughter approached the age that she might be ready to start reproducing, I told her that if she ever had kids, my name was Grandpa. My mother told me that if I ever had kids, she did not need to be "Grandma", but they damn sure better not call her "Granny".

I called mine Grampa.
My oldest daughter is 21, and married for over two years. I have advised her that if she has a little one (and there should be NO hurry on that) the child will call me Jim.
Grandparents are old people.
I'm 47. I ain't even CLOSE to old.

My maternal grandfather was "Granddaddy" and since he was my hero, that's what I wanted my grandchildren call me although they sometimes shorten it to Granddad which is fine. My wife's grandfathers were Big Daddy and Pa. My dad's step-father we just called by his first name. My dad died when my son was young but I seem to remember he called my dad granddaddy also. My wife's father was Pop to all the grandkids.

My Momma's Daddy stood about 5' 2" and probably weighed 100 pounds soaking wet. We called him "Little Daddy". But don't let the name fool ya, everybody knew better than to cross "Little Daddy".

Thanks for starting a neat thread.

My mother's dad died young -- she was in her teens -- so I knew only one grandfather, and he was Pop-Pop to me, as was my Dad to my sons.

I'm not a grandfather yet, but considering my German roots, if and when it happens, I think I'd like to be called "Opa".

As in the poem from Red Steagall,

Paw Paw

"I called my grand-dad, Paw Paw
And I loved him more than life

I tried to copy everything he did

The seat of his ol pickup was my bed
I learned to walk the way he walk
And cuss a little bit
I hung on every word my Paw Paw said

So, when my grandson came along
I recognized the chance to re-live
The memories of my childhood days

My daughter said that Paw Paw wasn't very dignified

But, I have him call me Paw Paw anyways.........."

I only met my one grampa, and called him that. My grandkids, however, have had many names for me, including grampa, gramps, bampa, and ******* (7 letter word for a depression in the earth where you would store your donkey). I think I deserve the last one the most!

My mom's parents were called "nanny" and "papa" pronounced pawpaw.
My dad's parents got extremely angry when i called them by these names, so they were granny and grandad. I was vastly closer to my mother's parents.

My wife calls her mother's parents, Little grandma and Little grandpop and her father's parents are Big grandma and Big Grandpop.
Her little grandma is a sweet 92yo 4' nothing little lady. :)

My oldest son's kids call their German grandparents Ohmma and Ohmpa(spelling?) and this side of the family Grandma and Grandpa. My other grandkids are just starting to talk and I don't care what they call me as long as it is often!

The kids call my Dad Pawpaw, he's the only grandparent left.

My wife's Mom was called Grandma, or more accurately Gramma since the kids couldn't completely pronounce the D.

Both of my grand mothers were called "Granny". My grand fathers were call "Paw Paw" then their last name. My dad was called "Paw Paw" by my son and my mother was called "Maw Maw" by my son. My grand daughter calls me "Paw Paw", which I am proud to answer when she does, and my wife is called "Gigi" by my grand daughter. I do not know why, but my grand daughter has called her that since she could talk. I just hope to be as good a "Paw Paw" as my grand father and father were.
