Narrowed down j-frame grip choices to two, ISO help

I have a Wyatt Deep Cover - essentially a 637 with a bobbed hammer and Performance Center treatment. Neither the standard Desantis clip grip it came with or my older Barami clip grip with Tyler T offer substantial recoil protection for my more sensitive carpel tunnel 67-year-old hands. I want a grip that will let me shoot standard .38 Special and +P defensive ammunition with the least amount of pain/discomfort.

I've narrowed my choices down to two grips - the Hogue Bantam Finger Groove Piranha Grip G10 or the Crimson Trace LG-350G GREEN OR RED LASERGRIPS® FOR SMITH & WESSON J-FRAME ROUND BUTT.

The gun will be worn in an AIWB or IWB holster for the majority of the time.

My basic question is really - putting cost aside - will the larger G10 grips provide enough area to distribute the recoil to minimize it or is it better to go with the new design of the Crimson Trace grips? Even though it's nice to have a laser sight I don't need one.

Thanks for any first-hand experience or advice!

I would recommend the LG405 since it has an air cushion on the backstrap. Really tames the recoil. I don't ever recommend G10 grips on a J if you're recoil sensitive.

Wide, hard stocks will spread out the recoil energy over a greater surface area but will not provide a lot of cushioning. The linked CT stocks would have more "give". Another good choice are the Pachmayr Compac style, rubber with a covered backstrap. Good luck in your decision.

Have you considered Ergo Deltas? Ugly as sin, but very comfortable to shoot with. Also make any J-frame point quite naturally.

Sorry, I know they're not one of the two you narrowed your choice down to, but they're the only ones I've had experience with. :o

Go with the Crimson Trace. You may not think you need the laser, but
you will find it very helpful with your dry firing, and it might be helpful
in an encounter where the attacker is too close for sights. Mine has the
red stream which is not great in sunshine. I am told the green works a
lot better. Mine are older so they don't have the cushioned back strap
but they seem to be ok for me. The recoil does not seem to bother too
much, but then I use an SP101, so the weight is helping mitigate the
recoil somewhat.

Another vote for Pachmayr Compacs, which I've used for years. Excellent for cushioning recoil and control. But I admit I'm intrigued by the weird-looking Delta jobs.

I like Hogue rubber grips on a J frame but of your choices I'd definitely get the laser grips.

I want to thank everyone for their comments, offers and advice. I actually made my decision and it wasn't either of my two original choices. I was interested in the Hogue Bantam G10 because of the looks but because of your advice I eliminated that because of the lack of recoil absorbtion.

I liked the description of the CT grips but I decided to forgo those because of the cost.

I bought the Pachmyr Diamond Pro grips and couldn't be happier! I've just returned from the range testing it out and it's exactly what I was looking for! Before, with the standard OEM Desantis Clip Grip, the Barami Hip Grip or the basic Hogue Bantam I was unable to shoot more than 10 rounds before the pain in my hands became too great. Today, I rapid-fired 150 rounds of standard 38 Special (130 and 158) and 20 rounds of Speer Gold Tip 135 +P. With the Diamond Pro I could have shot all day and experienced no discomfort.

Now, to find a reasonably priced high-ride OWB holster ;)!

Get a Tucker if you want OWB.

Btw, I have Barami hip grips with a Tyler T grip on my 340PD, and it's manageable with .357 but only with rubberbands on the grip as well. Aids with recoil and with overall grip.
