Navy Commander Relieved of Duty

I think the problem is.....

Heaven forbid that the troops be denied access to the Internet and sports scores.

....that unauthorized communication can be used to track where the vessel is. Just receiving scores might not be a problem, but any outgoing data/info might give away something. I don't know if/how this is done or what the complete answer is, but unauthorized communication is prohibited for a reason. And one person using the internet might endanger the ship and the entire crew. More of this 'me, me me' society that puts individuals ahead of everybody and all concerns and it's ok as long as you don't get caught.

As fully described here:

The Story Of Sailors Secretly Installing Starlink On Their Littoral Combat Ship Is Truly Bonkers

Thanks!

That 'splains' it very well. It sounds like their reason of 'just checking scores' wouldn't hold a drop of water. They were dishonest about breaking regulations and continued to be dishonest about it. I suppose that ALL of the chiefs were aware of this. Maybe all the enlisted men were, too. If that's the case I'd say they got off really LIGHT.

From the article:

After the destroyer lost steering in April, the McCain sent out a casualty report, or CASREP, requesting technical experts to visit the ship. These experts tried to troubleshoot the warship while it was pier-side in Bahrain in June.

The McCain's leadership requested to go to sea to address these issues properly, but the technical personnel were not funded or authorized to set sail with the destroyer. The warship left Bahrain in early July and immediately experienced the same problems.

I'm left shaking my head. How could the techs be expected to diagnose a steering issue in a non-dynamic environment dockside. Ridiculous.

A whole lotta  in that story, IMO.

The Navy seemed to be saying "suck it up & get to sea", IMO. Steering is serious business, in case the Navy didn't know that.

I also read the Navy is shutting down 17 ships due to personnel shortages.

Lack of maintenance has been on-going on Navy ships for decades now. But I bet they never missed a DEI class...............

Those of us who have served know there is one set of rules for the service academy grads, another for the other officers, one set of rules for the senior NCOs, another for the lower ranking EM, more recently, there are other priviieged groups, "approved" minority groups, women, sexual minorities, etc.
The female Chief of the Boat (?) of the USS Manchester was demoted one pay grade-basically an Article 15.

Well...with the lens caps closed it's pretty clear he wasn't aiming at Anything!:D

I want to believe he had so much hubris he could not admit to not being able to see through the backward mounted scope. Who set him up and how far up or down the ladder does it go?
Accurate assessment? Don't know.

Another WAG is the near miss is the excuse the USN waiting for after the embarrassing photo went viral.

That photo reminds me of one i saw at Fort Benning years ago. Showed
2 Ranger types, all camo'ed up-with a dog-hunkered down behind an M-60-with a blank adaptor on the muzzle.

Strange? ... Yes.
But if he could be pranked in such a way, AND still fire that weapon, can you really trust his judgement?
I'm sure there's volumes more than this to support the case, but focus is on this since it was public

Good point. The few good bosses I had over the years that I respected were those that were smarter (or better educated) than me and took the time to show me the way. I never would have pranked any boss though, not even the bad ones. Life gets pretty simple once to figure out which side you’re on.
