NcSTAR Mark III

Have you ever heard of thermal paste?

I can't really tell you man. I was just fixing it to my rail, it wasn't too tight or anything, and pop, it flew off.

Yeah I've heard of thermal paste, I have a syringe of Arctic Silver thermal sitting right here in fact! :)

How long the epoxy will hold depends on the quality of the epoxy and the cleanliness of the surface it was applied to.

I once had a Honda ATC 125m trike which I sold to a friend, he in turn shattered the reverse gear doing reverse drop outs. The gear fractured into 5 pieces. I took all five pieces and glued them back together with JB Weld Kwik and let it cure then sanded and filed the gear. It lasted the rest of that trike's life....

There should never be any pressure on those pins at all, so if they just came out because of poor tolerances (loose) then they should never come back out again.

LOL, thats awesome, I didn't know JB weld was that strong.

JB Weld is an impressive, steel impregnated epoxy. It's honestly one of the best I've ever used. Clear 2 part epoxies are good for parts that aren't bearing much of a load but if it's metal parts under stress JB does a great job in lots of applications.

When I bought my first boat, it was an outboard, the original owner put a whale tail on the outboard (helps the boat plane faster) well he put it on crooked. That bothered me.... So I took it off and I put a chamfer on each side of all four holes in the aluminum anticavitation plate. I then used some kneadable JB weld and made plugs for those holes. Once it cured I sanded it down, refinished the anticav plate and repainted it and then correctly mounted the whale tail.

You would never know that I filled those holes.

I worked for a turbine engine manufacturer as a college intern, and we had an issue with oil pumps. As you can imagine, customers like their $1m+ engines to have oil pressure ... anyways, it's a gear type pump, just two gears meshing together to pump the oil. I investigated some and found that at the limits of the blueprint (large pockets, small gears) there would be enough blowby that the pump wouldn't prime ... so, I jokingly asked about making the pockets smaller, and, surprisingly, got a response "oh, yeah, we have a FAA-approved rework practice for that - as a matter of fact, Joe is doing it today in bay 5".

So I go back to Bay 5 to see this approved rework practice.

The operator was filling in the entire cavity with JB Weld (he claimed it was not JB Weld, it was "metallized epoxy", to which I said "whatever") and machining the cavities back out. I couldn't believe it! With the number he had to do, my guess is if you fly regularly, the lubrication of the APU or engine was possible due to JB Weld.

Have to comment on the Mark lll scopes. I have sold several hundred of these (in various magnifications and reticle styles) through my website and have had possibly 5 returned for legitimate problems. NC Star immediately shipped me a replacement for each one. I have had a few returned for what was described as a crooked reticle, but when the scope arrived no problem was found. Overall, a good buy for the money. Any decent retailer will immediately replace a defective product, manufacturers warranty or not. NC Star markets many really well made and innovative products at excellent price points. On the other hand, they also market some of the worst dogs I've ever handled. The Mark lll scopes are a fine product as far as I can tell.

RRages,

I ordered my Mark III Ultimate One from you just last week. Than you for the outstanding service! I gave you a shout out on my You Tube video review of the scope.

I had no real worries about ordering this scope, because of you and the reviews that I've read about you...

Thanks again,

Brett

Wouldn't you opinion on a product that you sell be a little bit biased though? I can't really expect you to come in and and talk about how junky the stuff you sell is. Even if you're telling the truth, once would have to be suspicious of your bias.

That being said, my situation could have just been a freak accident, who knows? I was able to fix mine, and hopefully it stays fixed.

While we're on the subject, should I epoxy the screws that attach the scope to the base?

Well when you have other forum regulars purchasing from someone and saying things like "outstanding" "great to deal with" etc etc.. I'd tend to listed to what he has to say.

We know that we get what we pay for... You don't get top notch for bottom barrel. But I think I paid, precisely what my Mark III is worth.

i do have a question, what did you do to break your scope? i know it didnt ship like that. are you sure a little mishandling didnt cause some of it? i mean, you had people offering to fix it for you for free and turned it down. i break things all the time and get upset about it, it isnt that big of a deal. and yeah, rrages is top notch, i just got one of the best answers in a PM from a dealer that ive ever gotten, i just dont understand your animosity towards people trying to help you and will leave your thread alone because i dont want you to think im attacking you as well. i do want to say though, when people try to help you dont belittle them. sorry if i seem off base with my comments and i understand how you would think a dealer would be "bias" towards his/her merchandise but at least accept his opinion. NCstar isnt the only brand he carries.

Just because somebody is great to deal with doesn't mean they're going to be honest about the products they offer. Snakeoil salesmen wouldn't have made much money if they're weren't charming and friendly. I'm not going to assume something is good just because the guy who sells it says it is.

1. Who got upset? Not me. My $95 scope broke and I was more than content with throwing it away. Seems like it's the people like you who are getting upset.

2. Why won't I let people fix my scope for free? Because it's not their burden to bear, it's mine, so I used the advice given and I fixed it myself. There's no conspiracy, trust me.

3. I never claimed that it shipped that way. In fact, when I received it, I posted pictures of it here and said that I liked it. I have described more than once the situation where it broke, so if you didn't read it, that's not my problem.

4. This has nothing to do with the legitimacy of RRAGES.com. Never once did I doubt their ability as an online retailer. I merely said that it's not a good idea to take a salesman's advice on the quality of a product they sell because of course they're not going to tell you the truth IF it's junk.

.5 I accually started this thread. In an attempt to revive it, I ended up exchanging it for a ncstar laser/1x red dot. Now can co-whitness w/ iron sights. Love it!

LOL. 8 pages worth....

Begining of the end....What model did you exchange for and how much was it? I want to find something soon.

I went to one of the larger gun shops around yesterday, and the only thing with better/brighter optics than the NC Star was a $600 Burris. The Trijicon variable power red dot, Nikon, and Bushnell scopes were all about equal to my eyes.

Gun show is in a couple weeks. Will be saving up some cash ...

It's a ncstar 1x40 laser red dot with quick release and unlimited eye relief. #DLB140R, $70 at my local shop. They had the same one with out a laser for I think $40. The mark III I exchanged was $129. The sight is very clear and the laser/red dot setting switch feels better than the mark III. Mark III"s are pretty good though I think I just got a bad one. For what I'm using the rifle for the red dot is perfect. I was kinda upset that even with a riser I had to remove the rear sight. Now I can get quick target aquisition and I'm only out the $20 I paid for the riser. Hope that helps

I'm sad to report that my NcStar scope would not hold zero. It was fine for about five rounds then after that, it was way off. Now keep in mind, this was on a .223 (though, according to the description, that's what it's made for), so it may be fine on the M&P15-22. I guess now I have to review my options. They are:

1. Send it back to NcStar - Might not be an option since I had to epoxy parts of it. I'm sure they'll claim that it voids my warranty.
2. Sell it at a loss on ebay.
3. Keep it and see if it'll work with my .22.

What would you guys do?

I think the guy on post#37 had it figured out.

"Forget about glue and duct tape. Send it back to NcStar. They will send you a new scope. Put the new scope on your 15-22 (not a centerfire) and be happy."
