I have to admit that the reason i added the Colt to the poll was the Name Recognition. Historically it is the name most associated with 1911's and was the military choice. I have always thought you were paying more for the name then you were for quality. This thread is really showing my how wrong i was.

md... Have been carrying and shooting 1911s since the mid 1970s.. If you're looking for a range gun in a full size Government Model .45 take a look at the Colt Competition Model.
Can be had in blue or stainless, beavertail safety, dovetailed front sight, Novak adjustable rear sight, everything you need and nothing you don't.
The Springfield Armory Range Officer is also an excellent value. Shoot with several guys with them and all are very happy.
I also have a Kimber Stainless Target II and it is also a great shooter.
My favorite 1911 is a Commander (aluminum frame) in .38 Super. Recently bought a Dan Wesson Guardian and it is beautifully put together for the price... I would not want a Commander in .45 for a range gun...just kicks too much.

I hear all the time that Colt's hold their value better than the other brands and that may be true with their revolvers but I'm not so sure on 1911s. When I sold my 1984 Colt Combat Government Model it didn't bring near what I paid for it but my Rock Island Commander and my American Classic 1911s both sold for more than I paid for them just a few years later.
My full size ATI is a very good gun, shoots where you point it, very few malfunctions past 5 years, under $400 new, looks like the US issue guns if you don't read the "ATI", etc. I like it a lot. Only twice when taking it down for cleaning that danged spring like to take my head off! Two caps are lost somewhere on my cellar floor! I bought couple extras last time and never lost another one. Nice gun for the money; good bedside gun...I hope!
If I had to pick one, it would be this one.
A Colt "C"prefix that had been modified prior to my acquisition. It had been though a AMU unit and only had about 77 to 80% of the finish left.
It was sent to Walter Birdsong for his "Black Tea" finish. The recoil spring has been replaced and I prefer VZ grips. It is superbly accurate.

A Colt is a darn good 1911, and it will hold its value better then any of the other ones listed.

Do yourself a favor and at least check out the Dan Wesson line. I have CCO, its a shorten grip frame with a commander length bbl. I have shown mine to a range of people and everyone that racks it back gets this big grin on the their face. EXCELLENT trigger. I don't like the extended beavertail but most folks do. For that reason, I also have a LWT Commander.

Last April I purchased a Colt Gold Cup National Match (say that fast, fives times). It's a nice combination of everything that makes an excellent bullseye pistol.
One of the RSOs at the local range is capable of putting all eight rounds into one hole at seven yards off-hand.

That's what I did. I believe it was two or three years ago, after owning and shooting handguns for over 40 years, I decided I wanted a 1911. I looked at others, but knew I wanted a Colt, so I bought a stainless Competition model. I can't say as I've really "bonded" with it, meaning it's far from my favorite gun to shoot, but at the same time, it has been flawless. Not a single failure to feed or failure to eject. And I shoot it better than any handgun I own. So, no regrets. Glad I went with Colt.
I just bought another one on Sunday. It happened to be a new in Box Ruger SR1911. Not a big fan of SS but this one seems to be ok. But for 650 I had to buy it. I have a few more including a military 45 that was made for me by our Armorer in SEA many many years ago. I have a Kimber 4 inch Commander size as well as a Series 70 Colt and the one I shoot the most is an early 1996 Wilson Combat. Night sights need to be recharged. It came with a Marvel 22 conversion with it from Wilson. I also have a Springfield 1911 9mm Range Officer. Not a 45 but feels pretty good till you shoot it...and wait for the recoil that never seems to show up. Had to edit..Forgot the old Para Ordnance 3 inch LDA that I hardly ever shoot. Has the weirdest trigger ever...but always goes Bang

Heck I had a gun shop on the Eastern Shore of Md for 27 years and I couldn't get a CC License...But if you are connected you can get a CC. I did have a CC license in Pennsylvania though. That is why I bought that weird Para Ordnance LDA shorty. Pretty gun...odd trigger

Yup, they prefer only the thugs/criminals be armed. Makes it safer for them.

Dan Wesson. After thirty years of living with the 1911 in a professional capacity, I've determined that nothing else comes close in a production gun.

I bought a Colt Series 80 Officers (enhanced) in the mid/late 90's that I carried for years. Even though I have also since moved away from the cocked & locked style of carry, gravitating to the HK platforms (for carry), I still have much love for this pistol and will never part with it. True tack driver.
