Our house was a total loss in the Labor Day Fire. One of the tings destroyed was my gun safe. Now I know there are better safes on the market, this one was actually called a "Residential Security Container" BUT if you are in the market for a safe give good consideration to Cannon. I sent them pics of the destroyed safe, they asked for some additional information. A few days ago a truck arrived in the yard with a replacement safe. They said it was covered under warranty.

How did the contents fair?

Where was the safe during the fire, basement, upper floor?

Sorry about the fire, its one of my fears :(

The box is rated for 30 minutes @1200 degrees. This fire was hot enough to melt the engine out of my BMW and it burned for days. The contents were not salvageable.

For a reference pure aluminum melts at 1253. Not sure the melting temp of the alloy used to make engine blocks but it would be higher.

It was in the den of a doublewide about 3 feet above ground level. The wall and roof collapsed on top of the safe and continued to burn/smolder.

Glad you are Ok. The guns, car, house can be replaced. Sorry
to hear about your misfortune however. What kind of inventory
of weapons did you lose if you don't mind my asking? Anything
that had sentimental/family ties? Good to hear about the replacement
safe. Let us know if we can help you locate anything.

The biggest was Dad's Auto-5 that Mom gave gave just about the time I was born. Several milsurps that are going to hard to find in like condition.
An 1894 Marlin in 41 mag, one of my favorite shooters. Most of the rest were more modern and replaceable but there are other things that have to come first. So far I have accounted for the remains of all but one. I had a 44HE on my work bench that I have not been able to find in the rubble.

The internal shots are as found when I cut it open. The light may not be the best. All I had at the time was a little point and shoot.

I almost cried when I saw the interior of your safe, don't know if I could deal with it as well as you have, at least you are safe, and, I suppose, most guns can be replaced, but the heirlooms are a heart breaker.

The choices pretty much were to go sit in the charred remains of our formerly glorious pine forest and cry or hunker down start cleaning up and begin to rebuild. I wanted to do the former but chose the latter.

When we left we had all the pets loaded (the bird, the 5 dogs) but the outside cat was nowhere to be found and, as cats do ignored, all the calls for her. She, reluctantly, got left behind. The evacuation lasted two weeks. When they finally opened the highways back up so we could return I parked the travel trailer and got it set up looking for the cat the whole time and calling her. No sign. When we were getting ready to call it a night and go to bed my wife looked out the front window and said "the cat is sitting on your truck". Then and there I knew everything was going to be OK.

The recovery has been slow and the work continues. Normal will return. The "family" is all together. Most of the things can be replaced in time.

SUGGESSTION REGARDING SAFE

I have posted a similar response to a similar situation about a year ago, but I feel it is important enough to post again.

I have a Liberty Presidential Safe and it is a very high quality safe. It is fire rated, burglar rated and is quite good looking. Because it is one of their larger models I believe it weighs over 1000 pounds empty, and is quite roomy. I have not had any problems with it in 17 years.

NOW...... that said, if I knew then what I know now I would NOT buy a "GUN SAFE"! I would buy a used Jewelry Store Safe! Those types of safes are MUCH stronger, have MUCH HIGHER ratings for both burglary and fire, and are twice the weight. There are PLENTY available from local safe companies who resell them after a Jewelry store goes out of business, and at better prices than a gun safe. The only down side to doing this is that you will have to build storage for your guns inside which is not a real big deal and IMHO worth the hassle. Typically, Jewelry Safes are not finished with the same high gloss Fancy-Dan paint job, but when it comes to the task they are ultimately built for (security) they are heads & tails better than a "gun safe".

If I were in the market today that's the way I would proceed.
