A friend of a friend has a 1964 S&W Model 27 for sale. I have not seen the gun but my friend says that it is real good condition and he believes that it has a 5"bbl. My friend THINKS that his friend has the original box also.
I always hankered for a 27 with a 5" and plan on taking a look at it. I hope this is enough info for you to give me a ballpark value before I go look at it.
What do you think?

Now I've seen the gun. There is no box, papers tools etc., just the gun. According to the current owner the gun was manufactured in 1964 (Ser # S239XXX). Although I am a shooter and not a collector, I would say that the gun is more than 95%.
The bluing looks excellant with just the very lightest beginning of a line on the cylinder from rotation. The rest of the blue is excellant except the blue shows more wear on the ejector rod. The markings are all crisp and I don't think that was re-finished. The grip panels are Magnas.
The owner took the gun to a local dealer who offered to take it on consignment and ask $599 and take his share out of the selling price.
The owner figurs that he can get $650 on his own but I doubt that he has the resources to do so.
I THINK that I could get the owner to sell it to me for $600-$625.
What do you more knowledgable guys think?

Personally I pay a small premium for S prefix guns, and if it was in the S284XXX or so even more.
at 600-625 youre not stealing it, but youre not getting raped either. Just depends on what you want

$600 to $625 would be a fair price for the gun as described around these parts. A 5" Model 27 would be a nice addition to almost any S&W collection. Good Luck,

Jerry

I would by an "S" gun in that condition at that price. I have 3 "Ss" and am always looking for more.

Frankly, if it is a 27-0 in that serial number range and in that condition, I think it's worth quite a bit more. I would grab it!
