It uses .45 ACP ammo.
They can be loaded in the cylinder and fired like a rimmed cartridge, but they can't be extracted with the rod, as they have no protruding rim. They are used in full or half moon clips, which hold three or six rounds. The whole clip or clips are placed in the cylinder. The extractor rod can then eject all of them at once.

Hi Jim, but what does it say on the ammo box, I went looking today, I saw nothing with 45 ACP just 45 auto. Who makes some ammo for this????. Ned

That's not stupid. You just learnt something new.:D
ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol.

Here's a third tidbit. Your revolver will also shoot a cartridge named the .45 Auto Rim. You don't need the pesky moon clips to use Auto Rim cartridges, they will function just like one would expect a revolver cartridge to function. They are basically the rimless .45 ACP cartridge with a thick conventional revolver rim added. You generally won't find them at Wally World, though.

Very nice revolver you got!

Very nice buy. Go get yourself about 20 or more moonclips and pre-load the moonclips before you go to the range. You'll be amazed at how fast you can go through them. A whole lot better than chasing brass around.
