I have a smith & wesson model 10 .38 special that I bought a few days ago and need help dating it. Inside the fram when you open the cylender up it has 00813 and on the bottom of the frame it has 86j597. Any help is greatly aprreciated!!! The & symbol looks really unique on it.

You don't have a model 10, you have some form of a J-frame revolver. Is it only a five shot or six shot? 86J597 is a J-frame serial number shipped in 1971-1972. Where you saw the 00813 there should be a model number like MOD 36 on the frame, not the yoke.

My model 10 is a 6 shot - don't think there is a 5 shot model 10

What caliber is stamped on the barrel...EXACTLY what does it say?

Fixed or adjustable rear sight?

Round butt, or square butt?

Blued? Stainless? Nickel?

Definitely 5 shots?

Pics would speed things up. - JM.

I have made an error. It is a model 36. I have no idea why I thought it was a model 10. But its a model 36 with a square but, 5 shots, blued. Thanks for the info guys!

See, I told you that in post #2. :D :D They are great little guns. My 36 square butt was confiscated by my wife and now I only have occasional visitation rights. :(
Enjoy your new find!

I have a 3" square butt 36, IMO one of the best of the J-frames. It's like a mini- Model 10:)
