I recently learned about the military 40% discount on new firearms and that's just too good to pass up. I currently looking at getting a 1911 or the M&P 9 pro. Any suggestions as to what model or any reviews would be nice. I already have a M&P .40 and a Rock River Arms AR-15 so those are already out.

You already own an M&P, so maybe the 1911 is the way to go. With a 40% discount, that is where I would be looking, real hard. The 1911 platform has an almost infinite amount of doodads and upgrades you can do to customize your gun. I own a Colt 1991A1 that would prolly be my only 45 if it came down to keeping one only. The gun shoots better than me. The S&W 1911 is a nice piece. I'd buy that one.

I've have been a member of the church of 1911 for a long time but last winter my wife bought a M&P 9c and I liked it so I went out and bought a M&P 9mm pro this spring and love it.
If I where to buy another 45 I'd have to think serious about an M&P.
Or you could buy one by the end of this year and buy the other after the first of the year.Your alowed one each year from what I understand.
If you really want to have fun buy a S&W 617 10 shot I have one with a 4" barrel it goes to the range with me every time.

With that discount, if it were me, I would get a S&W .45 1911 DK (Doug Koenig edition). My wife and I shot my friend's over Thanksgiving, and we want one....bad! One sweet pistol.

Initial posts said no expiration. But go back and look again. The promotion ends at the end of the year according to the latest posts. If so, better move fast, you've only got a couple of days to get it done.

Roger that. If I had a 40% discount I would buy a 1911.

There's lot's to choose from. Many good 1911 guns out there.

I was looking at the gunsight edition 1911. Anyone ever fired or heard anything about one? I'll occasionally do tactical pistol competition, kind of like IPSC. If at all possible is there anything I can use in a competition but still be able to carry without worrying about reliability issues?

I like the basic 1911 and add only what I like , and then as often as not take that doodad off , because I didn't like it after all . I like a steel frame . Yes , I know how much difference a small reduction in weight can make . I don't know about the new alloys Scandiam or what ever but I do remember how those gun writers for the magazines that live off gun advertising said the alloy frames on the old Commanders would never let you down , wrong , and how the early rush to satisfy the appetite for stainless guns led to the use of metals that would gall and accrete from the adjacent material . I see far more 60 year old steel Colts than Randalls or AMT Long slides . If carryng a couple extra ounces was going to push me toward a non-steel frame , I would just have my wife carry it .
