Hey guys i wanna buy this gun but i am not sure,if everything is right with it...it should be new,but i have never seen such finish on a revolver.Do you see the cylinder rod?it has the usual blue finish, but the gun has some different one...do you think its an original finish on a new gun or was it re-blued?

thanks a lot
peter

have a look, what do you think?New or refinished?

There is one for sale here on the forum with a similar finish. I figured it must be refinished too because I dont think Smith put anything like that on a revolver. Even the model 28 is not that flat.

Welcome to the Forum. It has been refinished; one fairly typical clue is the hammer and trigger are no longer case-colored, but are the same as the rest of the gun. If it is mechanically sound it may still be worth buying, but not at a new/excellent original price.

Also, Welcome to the Forum! If the gun is mechanically sound, and you desire a shooter, then O.K. At the right price, this would be something that I would buy. If I remember right a refinish drops the value quite a bit. (someone smarter than me, will probably speak up)
I got a 586 4" about a month ago, in very good condition w/ original target grips. It is a no dash gun. Did a trade, and have $450 into it. Is the finish on it going to be durable? Good luck with your decision! Bob

Is that 586 a 7-shot? IIRC there was a run, twards the very end of 586......pre lock 586 production, of some flat finished 7-shot 586's.

But I seem to recall they may have had a 1/2 lug barrel. They did have a very similar flat finish........but I think the 7-shot cylinder may have been titanium.......or a flat siver finish.......can't remember. My oldtimers is acting up today.

Anyways, I would opine that the 586 in the picture, is a cobbed together frankengun. The front sight, the barrel match to the frame, the different ejector rod, the different finish. Somebody got creative. Regards 18DAI

a definite refinish...and not done that well it appears...a 586 is not difficult to locate...good luck and welcome to the forum!

A really poorly done re-finish. They even re-finished the front sight, you can still see a little of the orginal orange. Why would you do that to such a nice S&W?

No, mine is original finish. They only made like 3k or less of them in the late 80s early 90s. Mine is a -3 by the way.
