Need help identifying new pistol

Hi all
Just picked up new pistol today, Looking at the book I think it is a 38/44. has a serial number of s706xx Barrel is 41/2" seems to have been cut. sight is different, N frame and heavy. any ideals?

Well,

It looks like a transitional gun, displaying pre and post war elements. Single line "Made in USA" and long action for the pre-war element. If that is a factory installed adjustable rear sight (looks like a post war micrometer to me), with a 4 1/2 inch barrel, I'd guess it is a cut down 38/44 Outdoorsman.

Interesting front sight assembly. I can't say I've seen one similar.

That looks like a modified .38/44, but I don't know if it is a cut-down Outdoorsman or a Heavy Duty to which someone added adjustable sights. With that serial number, it should be a postwar transitional model. Do you have the same serial number on the cylinder back face and the barrel underside?

And just to be precise, did you measure the 4 1/2 inches from the muzzle to the cylinder face, or to the frame? I am guessing to the cylinder face, because the barrel appears to be just slightly longer than the one on my four-inch HD, which dates to the same time frame.

I'm sure Jerry or Bill will have thoughts on this one. But whatever the details of the mods, it looks like a great shooter. Congratulations.

Can you provide another photo or two looking at the top of the barrel and rear sight ? Does the serial number on the barrel match the frame butt ?

Yes serial numbers match on barrel and the cylinder,also on grip thanks

It looks like a tranisition 38/44 outdoorsman that someone has cut the barrel and put what looks like a Remington front sight base on the front. My 2 cents. It is not a HD.

Test and see if it will take a .357Magnum round !

Hi All
I am curious it has a very small forcing cone 1/8th of a inch deep than rifling is that the norm. And how many places did thay put the serial number? Mine has one on the butt, on the ejecter rod housing, on the cylinder, and on the inside of the yoke where the cylinder is connected. I also checked and it will not take a 357 mag Thanks max

Look on the underside of the ejector star.

Many ODs & HDs that were modified such as ours were also reamed out to accept .357Magnum.
I own several Outdoorsman and three of mine were reamed to .357Magnum sometime in the past !

Well I was cleaning barrel tonight seemed to be a lot of lead build up just past the frame and I found a bulge at that point. No trace on the outside. Have to take it to smith and have it checked out. Max

did find serial number under star Thanks
