Need help making a choice

Well the off duty supervisor (wife) is giving me a kitchen pass to by another revolver for my b-day tomorrow. I have narrowed down the wheel guns to three that are available to me. First one is a Model 27-2 6 inch, has original box & grips and I would rate it at 98% or better. Second is a Model 28-2 4 inch, like new in box but no box or paperwork. Lastly is a Colt Mark III Trooper with a 4 inch barrel, about 95% with box & original grips. I'm not looking for a safe queen, I already have some of those. I'm looking for a revolver to take for a range trip everyonr once in awhile, and something that is a pleasure to shoot. Price wise the 27 is $700, the 28 is $450, and the Colt is $600.
Any advice both positive & negative would be appreciated.

Of course I would pot for the 27 first. Naturally it is the most expensive gun, but worth it. Second would be the 28, and at $450 for a LNIB a darn good deal, and lastly the Colt, I've never been a trooper fan. If you were going to ever plan to carry it, I'd probably recommend the 28 as it is a 4", but for just plain shooting pleasure, the 27 would be it.

It's a nice quandary that has no bad outcome!

Kind of depends on whether you would be happier with a value purchase or the pride of ownership connected with an upscale model. I suspect you would get most satisfaction out of the 27-2, and most bang for the buck out of the 28-2.

I don't have anything against Colts (and in fact own several), but you should listen to somebody else about that one because the Trooper IIIs just don't do it for me. Given my druthers and the option, I would take a mid-'50s 3 5 7. (That's the Python precursor, basically the same gun without the vent rib).

If you have barrel length preferences, follow your instincts. The world's finest gun won't get as much use if it has the "wrong" barrel on it.

You know, don't you, that you are required to post photos of the new gun once you decide which one it will be?

By all means, the Model 27. If the war department will allow the expenditure, I think you would be well advised to get it - before she changes her mind.

You are in one of the good palces I think all of us would like to be in! If money is not a concern, I would buy the 27. If you have a limit, then I would buy the 28 and take it out and shoot the Hound out of it! Good thing is, whichever you choose will be a good gun...Ray

If it was me, I would get the 4" M28. Four inch N-Frames are something special. Sure, the M27 is a beautiful gun and you will have some real pride of ownership, but since you plan to shoot it, I would suggest going with the rough and ready M28.

You should squirel away the $250 you save and add to it regularly while hunting for a 5" M27. Just my two cents.

I would buy the 28 for the price. Then, buy your wife a gift with the difference. That'll get you a lot of points! The only difference between the 27 and 28, shooting wise, is the barrel.

Well I followed above advice and bought the Model 28, but the extra cash is going towards ammo. I really wanted the 27, but the intent was to get a workhorse shooter. Will post pics later but was wondering if someone would be able to date the revolver. Ser # N564XXX

It's a late '70s gun, probably '78 or so. No doubt you made the right choice if you wanted a workhorse type of gun. Congratulations on the new purchase.

I'd get the 28. I don't like 6 inch barrels at all and would not buy one myself because they're too 'barrel heavy'.

I wouldn't even consider the Trooper. I'd cross it off the list and not even consider it.

Tally, first as others have said HAPPY B-DAY. Go for the M-27, until I got my first one I had no idea what it was like to shoot a truly shoot a high quality revolver.

The 27's are the cat's meow,but I'd have to go with the 28-2 for my own use. The 28 action can be as smooth as you want it and you won't cry as much if it gets a scratch or two.
It's just a highly practical revolver for "use",IMO.

One thing to consider is your hand size, for me the Colts dont fit my smaller hands as well as the Smiths do, Colts are quality but for me nothing better than a model 27 for quality and beauty in a 357 mag. Ron.
