Need help picking a 1911

Springfield MilSpec if you can find one for $500....I did, but it was 3 or 4 years ago...Springfield GI, Rock Island GI, in about that order.

I love my RIA. I got it for $420+tax with all original equipment, a Wilson mag and a Kimber mag. Out of the box it fired perfectly and fed anything I put in it. The only down side is that eventually you'll want to upgrade it and that's a slippery slope. What started, for me, as taking it to a shop for new sights, ended up beind all new springs, polished feed ramp, new ejector, and a guide rod. It came back to me as a whole new weapon with all the attributes of the old and a much smoother trigger pull and less muzzle flip.

I just bought a brand new RIA M1911A1 today for $425 with a case. Can't wait to get it. I've just always wanted a .45.

1911A1 Auto Ord. made in WORCESTER MA.
Under $500 and and shoots hard ball with no problems.
I pinned the grip safety down and installed a long trigger.
Also replaced the main spring housing with a flat one.
Now it looks like a cross between a WWI and WWII pistol.

I have a number of 1911's from a Baer Thunder Ranch to a Springfield GI. The Baer is a wonder but expensive. Same for the Colts. The Springfield has been flawless to date, accuracy is around 3" with hardball and it's a hoot! I replaced a lot of the parts with regular GI parts and, except for the marking, it's nearly impossible to tell from a regular 1911A1 issue pistol. I paid $525 for mine OTD and have been really pleased with it. Recommend it highly.

I second what BE Mike had to say. I wanted a Colt SAA, but they're pretty high. Got an EMF, a real piece of junk, and pot-metal to boot. Got lucky and sold it, bought a convretible Ruger, 357 and 9mm. The grip isn't the same as the Colt and felt bad in my hands. Took a terrible beating on selling it, but finally got a refinished, beat up Colt. It shoots reasonable groups and they land where the sight look. I couldn't be happier.

+1 on the RIA. I bought a Compact model a couple years ago, and it shoots as well as my Springfield and nearly as well as my Colt Gold Cup. I did fit a beavertail grip safety, and upgrade the sights. The trigger broke at 5.5 lbs out of the box and clean.

1915 Argentine issued Commercial Colt,
Wrong vintage slide stop and trigger.
Cost was 700 last year.
It is 1 of 1000 made in the shipment, And book says most were worn beyond use, This one still has original barrel, Argentina likes to stamp serial # on all parts.
Now it's not worth a ton, And should only be shot with standard ball ammo and lightly at that since before 1924 slides were not hardened the full length.
But to me it's a real looker.

And this one below was the right place at the right time about 9 months ago, It came with no slide, All the major parts were well pitted from rust, Dates to 1915, But I tossed a 50s? slide on it, and replaced the barrel since the original one was shot out.
It cost me 50 bucks, Yup 50 bucks and it was all taken apart in a manilla envelope when I found it...
I thought I could not go wrong.
It's a fun shooter with who knows what history

I'm not one of those guys who say only a Colt will do.

I am one of those guys who get a lot of satisfaction out of shooting them.

Metroarms makes a nice 1911 too. I've had this one for awhile now and am quite pleased with it.

Just picked up my RIA 1911 today and a box of .45 ACP; can't wait to go shoot it at the range.

R. G. Amos;If it don't say "Colt", it ain't an 1911.

My Kimber has over 10,000 rds. through it and I just shot an entire match with it last Saturday with no feed/fire/or eject failures. It is very much a 1911!

I am surprised that only Willy mentioned the Kahr / Auto-Ordinance 1911. I am also looking for a second "shooter" 1911. A friend of mine had one of those at the last match. It looked good, functioned flawlessly, and can be had for right around $500. I am thinking real hard about getting one. Here it is:
