need help with 460 brass

I was given some 460 S&W brass and some of it has some rings and rough areas right where the bullet was. I am not sure if it will be a problem in reloads? I am hoping someone on this forum can give me some advise. Thanks Dan

It's difficult to see what kind of actual problems may come from the detail in the pictures. I will say that in my experience, brass changes shape very easily.

I do handload .460 S&W Magnum, I have not yet had any problems with any brass. If I had those, here is what I would do and what I might expect:

I would lightly lube the cases (I use Imperial) and then I would size them (I use Lee Carbide sizing die) and then I would load them. I would check to ensure they chamber properly.

Upon firing, any issue you had or thought you might have would iron out and be a memory.

They look like they were fired in a 460 chamber, that had been used with 45 Colt cases.

I don't see any problem using them!

Clean them and resize them. The line should be gone. Check the inside of the case for that line. If there is no mark inside, I would say they are good to go.

100% agree Ivan, it looks like carbon rings from a chamber not cleaned after shooting 45 Colt.

I had this happen to .357 cases fired after shooting 38 cases and not removing the built up carbon.

Thanks guys, I think you are probably right about the 45 colt being fired in the 460, I measured a 45 lc case and it is exactly the same length as the ring at the bottom of the rough area on the 460 brass. I have never seen that before but, it tells me how important it is to thoroughly clean the chamber after firing a shorter cartridge. Thanks again,

You may also want to check the cartridge for length. If they are too long, scrape the insides to see if ring has developed inside the cartridge.

This would give a good indication that the 460 round is about to separate.
