Trying to help a widow friend value her late husband's Pre 17, 6" 5 screw .22LR. It has target stocks and is in about 85% condition. Ser# is 54,000 range.

How old is this pistol and what real value would you put on it.

Any help is appreciated.

Jeff, that Model 17 on gunbroker is overvalued by $300 in my opinion - maybe a little more. Somebody with the knowledge will be along with the manufacture date.

I paid $600 last Summer for a 17-3 in better condition than the GB one. I paid $300 for a Model 17-6 last month and today paid $330 for a Model 48-2 (.22 mag).

I think your friend could reasonably ask $550-$600, and perhaps take a little less. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I kind of felt like that price was a little high myself. If he had the box and better pictures, it might help. I just don't know the precise nature of the market when dealing with pre numbered models vs. newer numbered models.

This pistol may even be a K-22, it looks just like the top one in this picture. I know just enough about Smith and Wesson models to be wrong.

Should be a 1948 K-22 Masterpiece, aka pre-17. In the condition you mention, I'd agree with Sealevel, and expect to get $500-$550.
