Need help with rust on rear sight

I've noticed a small dot of rust developing on the rear sight of one of my 686's. It's just below the notch. I read the threads about using fine bronze/steel wool and various oils to remove rust on blued guns, but would this be the same procedure on a sight? I wasn't sure if I would end up rubbing the black off of it. I guess I can buy a new sight if I mess this one up, but I thought I'd check in here first.

If it is small enough you could use oil, cloth and your fingernail to get it off. I have read about others using pennies as well.

Shoot it with WD-40, after its set for a few minutes brush it with a stiff tooth brush. Short squirt of WD ocasionally will keep it good.

WD-40.........it's not just for breakfast anymore!

Breakfree CLP and a toothbrush. I hade the exact problem on a 28-2, fixed in about 2minutes, never returned.

I would use a toothpick and oil. Use the tip to dig into the rust and spare the sight surface that you want to save. You can touch up the sight with a fine tip black sharpie if needed.

Use aluminum wool, not steel. The bits of steel wool will only add to the problem. The rust be "removed" entirely to be effective, then apply a good gun oil or CLP to prevent its return. If the bluing is worn, a simple touch-up kit can restore it. WD-40 is designed as a water displacer and isn't the best for rust prevention. It also leaves a film that gets gummy. I quit using it and returned to oil when my shotgun barrel rusted while using WD-40.

Here's one more opinion...........Use whatever you want for the removal,(brush, toothpick,etc.) but use Corrosion X for the penetrating oil. Very light rust seems to "rub off" with out removing the bluing. Good luck.................Sprefix

Thanks to everybody for the advice. After a couple sessions of messing with it using a mix of some of your suggestions based on what I already had on hand, I'm happy to say that we've solved the problem. I'll make sure and keep a good coat of oil on it from now on. Also, good to know about the Sharpie trick. It doesn't look like it'll be necessary in this case, but it's probably worth throwing one in my box of cleaning goodies. Those things always come in handy.

Sprefix-I'm not familiar with Corrosion X, but I will look into it. May need to pick some up.
