I just bought a used Sw22 victory. Barely ever shot and looks, functions like new. Came with the picitanny rail already on it from previous owner and a scope attached. Took it home and decided to strip it and clean it as the factory grease was still inside. All went well until I decided to remove the picitanny rail to see if any cleaning needed done under it (was trying to make it shiny)

All I gotta do it's remove that 3/32 screw and rail can slide off. Well.... That screw won't come out. I even checked manual to see if it is reverse threaded and it says turn counter clockwise. I've done this. I don't know how it was torque in by previous owner, any loctite, I don't know. But I have BROKEN 3 bits so far trying to remove it. One of those bits was a extra strong impact rated bit. I'm at a complete loss. How the heck can this be in so tight?! The screw must be a strong alloy or something because the hex thread on it still looks pretty good, bits still grab well, it's just I cannot take it off. Any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone before? Since it was used I don't know if Smith would help me. I don't know how screw was put in (could be super glued for all I know...) it'll suck if I have to pay a gunsmith to get this out, really defeats the deal I got buying used.

Anyway. Any help greatly appreciated!

Just curious, do you want to remove the rail permanently, or do you just want to remove it for inspection and then put it back on? If the answer is number two, then I would just leave it alone. If the answer is number one, I would apply heat to the screw. I do so by putting a soldering iron tip to the screw head to heat the screw up, and if loctite was applied the heat should help break it loose.

I was removing for inspection and wanted to try with factory sights before I went full scope.

I did actually get this off a few hours ago. Soldering iron didn't work, nor did a Bic lighter. I ended up bringing out my propane torch and applied directly to top of screw. Figured the rail is already black and if any peice got ruined I'd rather it be the rail over the stainless steel slide. Well. Torch did it. Got screw off! Figured out what they did. There is super glue all inside. Insane... I used torch to burn off all the glue from screw (got it cherry red while I had screw out and on concrete), solvent to get any residual glue inside mount and applied some lubricant before putting screw back in place. I'm gonna see if Smith and wesson can give me a replacement screw as the torch likely did some work hardening on the screw, it's likely a little more brittle now. I also lost the screw used for rear sight elevation adjustment so... Might as well ask for both (it was a night...)

No damage or warping to rail or slide. Everything looks and fits as it did before so got lucky and avoided paying a gunsmith to likely do same thing to get screw out.
