So I acquired this old 44. It predates the model 29. Can anyone give me a ball park estimate as to the value of this piece? Thanks in advance!
Here's what I have:
Serial S 17208 on the butt and S 172085 on the frame
44 magnum
6.5 inch barrel
5 screws
Blue (but it may have been reblued See pic of hammer and trigger)
Pics attached. Could send more if needed.

Thanks again!

I'm no expert but it looks like a 6.5" "44 Magnum" from just before model numbers appear. Looks to have been poorly refinished. The stocks are worth about $500. The gun, my guess is maybe $500 as a shooter.

First, it isn't a five screw gun, only four. The top sideplate screw isn't there (unless it is well camouflaged!). I can't see it, but there must be one in the front of the trigger guard. That's your fourth screw.

Second, the serial number has to be S172085. If the 5 is absent from the butt, it was polished off when the gun was refinished.

S 172085 on the frame
I don't know what you mean by this. Where "on the frame?"

Thanks! Your right, its a 4 screw... By frame I meant under the yoke. Also, upon closer look the 5 at the end of the serial number on the butt is still there but a little faded.
Thanks again.

Looks like late '56 or early '57. I would think $1,000 would be the minimum.

Agree with the $1000 minimum and think it could easily go for $1200 plus. It is often said here that "any old N frame is worth $500." This is an old N frame but a pre-29 and there aren't that many of those. And as mentioned before the "cokes" are probably worth $500 by themselves. If it is mechanically sound and the recoil shield doesn't show a lot of shooting wear I'd pay $1000 for it any day and probably more. Good luck.
