I am not a fan of the 5.56 NATO. However I do like the AR platform. Thus today I am going to order an AR in 308. I am looking at the following. S&W, Bushmaster, DPMS. and CMMG. All of these have ARs in 308 in the sub $1500 range which is what I can afford right now. Anyone have one of these rifles or know much about them. I know S&W makes a fine AR because I had one in 5.56. However none of the S&W come with sites thus if I buy one the price after I add a scope will be over the $1500 range.

Most AR 10 are not the same. Each company does something unique to its design and some parts might or might not fit, including mags. AR15s are all standardized.

Last month I was shooting long range with a friend, when he pulls out a M-4 type of AR;16" barrel, only it is in 308 with a full length scope rail. On the rail are bolt on sights, the rear was a post with aperture with twist for adjustment clicks. He fired three shots at our closest targets very rapidly; 235 yards. He beat the snot out of the 4" x 6" plate! The lazed a plate on the hillside, 624 yards and put in 22 clicks of elevation and ended up needing 2 more, he proceeded to put 8 shots slow fire on a 12" round plate OFFHAND! His little AR wasn't on your list and cost about 2 grand plus sights, but he got very good results for his money. Think about saving up a little longer and buying what will be your best rifle. Ivan

I'm not trying to dissuade you, but have you considered ArmaLite?

I have been assembling and messing around with AR10's for quite some time and have always had good luck with ArmaLite.

They were manufacturing them a good long while before the current crop of manufacturers got into the fray.

Also, if you want quality glass, you may end up spending nearly as much on an optic as you do for the rifle, particularly after adding a good mount or rings which can easily add $100-$300 more.

I would look for a quality used rifle or carbine and mount the best glass I could afford on it.
Also, stock up on magazines!

Good luck in your quest! :)

I can only speak to the DPMS, and I own the LR308. It's really more of a target rifle for me. But, it's extremely accurate, and will hold 1/2 MOA at 200 yards. It has a 24" barrel, and it's a flat top version, using only a scope. Recoil is mild, and it just runs like a top. I reload for it, and I shoot 168gr Sierra Match Kings and Varget powder. I also run Lake City Match in it when I can find it. Groups great with it also.

I've read a great deal of history on the 7.62mm AR platform. And I still don't understand why the DoD didn't go to the AR platform in NATO caliber. I love my M1A, but the AR is a great platform.

I have a bushmaster 308 orc the reciever and bolt group is the same as the dpms barrel is 20 inch it is the lightest 308 I have read about shoots very well and there are more aftermarket things avialiable it was 1200 and I don't see how you could beat it for the money

I have looked at Armalite and I believe it maybe my second choice. Right now I am looking real close at the Ruger. Price is just a bit over the $1500 I was trying to hit but I sure like the looks ot the Ruger. Going to study the subject some more.

I have the DPMS ATAC Oracle. Magpul .308 magazines fit perfectly. I installed a red dot, vertical fore grip, and surefire light mount. It's heavy, especially with a full 25 round mag, but it's my favorite black rifle at the moment (even though mine is sand)

Give a look at Windham Weaponry - they have a .308 AR platform with wood furniture. I stopped by their factory in Maine & visited with Richard Dyke, CEO & the original owner of Bushmaster - quite an interestng fellow, to say the least. He graciously invited my wife & me into his office to show the product line & give us a little history of his life. I got to see the first Bushmaster he built (and subsequently had gold plated!). Anyway, I have one of their M4 SCR carbines & am quite pleased with it.

I have a S&W M&P10. It uses the LRmags and so far I like it.
I'm not sure what they go for now, but when I got mine a year ago they ran $1200-$1300.
That was flat top so sights or optics were additional.
Still a good price for a .308.
Keep an eye out and you can find a .308 in that price range still, I believe.
What you choose to add will be additional, of course.

I owned a DPMS LR308 for a while, and used it as my patrol rifle for a couple of years. I thought it was a good value for the lower cost, compared to others at that time. The quality of the DPMS was good, and with factory ammo it functioned 100%. It had a hard time functioning with some surplus type ammo, which was warned about in the owners manual. It is a lighter weight 308 and that was a good thing for a couple of extended situations carrying it. When I owned the DPMS only factory metal mags were available, and they were hard to find. I believe that has changed with Magpul coming in with their fine magazines. But I sold the DPMS to help my son pay for some schooling. The things fathers do...... :)

A coworker had an Armalite AR10 which he could never get to complete a 60 round qualification without choking. I don't know if it was just his particular one or what, but it put me off that brand. Another coworker had an M&P 308, which shot well and functioned fine. I never got to shoot it, but I never saw it malfunction when he was shooting it.

I now use an LMT 308, with an ACOG 3x mounted on it. It's much more accurate and functions 100% with any 308 ammo I shoot, including surplus. Quality, accuracy, and function are over the top..... but that comes with a price both in $ and weight. If I could own two 308 ARs the DPMS would be the one for all around use, and the LMT would be for long range target work with a target type scope and bipod.
