+1 on the VANSON leathers...probably THE finest biker leathers made. And they are CUSTOM made to your size. I'm tall with a 36" sleeve. My Vansons are the first bike jacket that finally keeps my wrists covered.
They are in Portland, easy to find and impressive to visit.
That said...I've also got a set of BMW, state of the art Gore-Tex, Cordura and Kevlar jacket and pants. They do NOT look right on say a Harley but on a touring bike or my GS they blend right in. I've worn them since 1994 and they DO keep you dry as well as much COOLER when it's hot. They are the only gear I wear when the temerature is above 70. But I've also worn them in 30 degree weather and once rode 500+ miles in 38-40 degrees with WET SNOW the entire trip. I was covered with snow, but was DRY and warm. The synthetics are amazing.
The new synthetic stuff breathes far better than leather but has downsides too. Probably half of the synthetic gear out there is cheap crap. Go high quality.
For custom made gore-tex check out the Roadcrafter or Darien gear from Riders Wearhouse.... aka Aerostich in Duluth, MN.
