I am interested in buying a model 18. Can anyone out there give me some idea what thay are going for. I have not seen one for some time. I have a feeling this will be a good excuse to go to a lot of gun shops and gun shows.

I found mine on GB for about $500.
I added the grips.

It took me a while to find one, so be patient when looking.
They don't come around every day at a good price.

While at the gun show yesterday talked to a man that had an 18-3 he wanted to sell. Normal holster wear and incorrect grips, it sold for $550. If a dealer at the show had it in a case, I would expect to see no less than $600 around here.

Florida Guy, what a nice 18 you have, I would call that a deal around here.

I've seen more Model 18's at gun shows in the last three months than I have seen the previous 5 years. All in very good condition and all priced at $800. The dealers keep bringing them back, though.

18s are scarce and spendy, for sure.
Was lucky to find my well used one for $475. A transitional -4, barrel not pinned
Had to drive over the Cascades in a snowstorm to get it.
Came with rubbers on it, threw them away and added a nice set of stocks.

Well I recently paid $ 850 for this one with all the goodies .

boatbum101, you bought a brand new one! You didn't get hurt. I doubt if you will find one for less than $600 in any kind of decent condition and up from there the nicer they get. Be prepared for a long search, but I have seen a few on Gunbroker over the past few months, but I have seen only 1 at a gun show in the past 2 years.

Found mine last year at Kittery Trading Post in NH, 'twas a 1982 vintage for $475. It's in good shape and shoots very well. I'd been looking for a Model 18 for over a year.

I started looking for one about two days ago and found mine a day later. Shipped June 22, 1959, target grips, 98-99% condition with factory letter. It should be here Wed. Paid under $700 shipped. I have a soft spot for the older 22 LR Smiths.

As often happens on the forum here, a thread pops up, several opine they would like to have a hard to find model that just doesn't show up often, then people start dragging them out of storage and showing them off and when someone who never shoots theirs and bought it years ago cheap sees someone else sell theirs for a goodly price, suddenly there are more threads and two or three for trade or sale. I've seen it a few times.

My experience has been like everyone else - NEVER see them locally in my area except for one owner at the local club who just refused to even consider selling and had not seen one at a gun show in over two years.

More threads on 18's on the forum here in the last month than the last entire three years and actually been a few for sale . . . that's how I got mine; that, persistence and luck.

And the above described starts people beating the bushes locally and on-line and more threads and comments pop up about their good fortune. Makes it sound like, "oh, they're out there all over the place, ya just gotta look". No, they're not, it's just a focused result of a small group of enthusiasts zeroing in on a particular model for a while. Like I said, I've seen it happen before here with other models.

All you have to do here to find someone with something buried back in the safe that is seldom seen is to start a thread about how hard they are to find and how hard you've been looking - before the day is out someone will post pictures of a new one in the box with all the goodies that they traded an RG 22 for forty years ago . . . :p and Dick Burg will have two boxes for it.

NFrameFred, I believe your right. I found mine the other day when someone had a thread going and a gentleman joined the forum so he could get a value for his 18 so he could put it up for sale due to having tremors and upcoming cataract surgery. I PMed him telling him when he decided on a price to let me know because I was interested in it. Well, we got it all worked out and it's on the way to my house now. I wasn't looking for this particular model but I do try to add to my 22LR Smiths when I can. And Dick Burg , I could use a box for my 1959 M-18.:D
