Need more options

I want a 45 caliber carry revolver. I want it to shoot 45 Auto and 45 Colt. I reload and shoot both. I was considering a 625, but at the price, weight, and width I'd rather get the Ruger Redhawk that shoots both. But it's still big for carry except in the woods. So I looked at the governor. Much lighter. Slightly smaller footprint. But seems to be really disliked. While I don't mind the 410 aspect, it seems to be really frowned upon by some. And I wouldn't use it much which just makes the extra size and length irrelevant and decreases accuracy and velocity. So I need a governor without the 410. And I don't want a 1k+ night guard either. Why can't s&w make a 45 caliber double action that shoots both 45s with a barrel and width short enough to be carried. Like a 69 2.75 but in 45 Colt and cut for moonclips. And keep it under 35 oz. Is there just no demand for such a thing?

CHamber and di ensional differences aside, Im not sure of the market currently for 45LC. Smith doesnt gamble much anymore when it comes to designing new guns.
They look heavily on current demand and trends and adjust accordingly.
Still late to the game with a current 10mm semi auto but I digress
Not sure if demand for 45LC will return.
Ask any younger kid these days about a 45 Long Colt and you will get the answer yeah those “Colt 45’s are ok. “ while browsing the latest Sig’s.

I'm 26 and the 45s are my favorite cartridges. I just really don't care about plastic 9s. Or metal 9s for that matter.

Personally I like the 45 lc by itself. I don't believe they make a 45 lc/45 auto combo that is compact.

I have several45acp/colts. Use a 45 colt cylinder with the center section relieved for moon clips by milling.

Whats wrong with the 325s. Big bores and light.
I have 2 snub 325s and I am going to take one of them and replace the cylinder with a stainless cylinder in 45 colt.

S&W can not make an L frame 45 without reworking the internals. Ya, I know all about Taurus and CA, But I also have a couple CA and a Taurus and several L frame 44s and some good calipers. Unless S&W reduces the OD of their ratchet 5 45s will not fit a L frame OD cylinder and leave any outside wall. If they reduce the ratchet they have to move the hand inward to operate it. The slot for the hand has to move in. The hand rides on the side of the trigger so that would need narrowed and so would the hammer in that area. Oh, yea, then the barrel would have to be lowered in the frame if the chambers were moved in on the cylinder.

Not going to happen.

You could cut a 1917 or Brazilian down and install a reworked cylinder. You can even trim down the grip frame some.

FWIW if you like the Governor or Judge, go for it. Bashing them is a cottage industry on gun forums.
I have a Judge and am considering a Governor being it can also shoot the ACPs.

I've got a 625 mountain gun in .45 acp. It's a great shooting revolver but not one I'd want to carry anywhere but in the woods.

I get where you're coming from.

455 is quite large for a mid size revolver, especially a swing out cylinder. There's just not a lot of room left for the metal needed to take higher pressure big-bore stuff. Part of the problem with the 45 Colt is that there are loads out there that will blow up many guns designed for the normal loads.

I think the Governor should fit your purposes just fine.

I have contended that each time S&W has to stamp ".45 COLT CTG" on one of their barrels a small part of them dies. They just hate it

I could go for "more options" too but I'm not holding my breath, though they did (finally) surprise us with a M610 again.

Personally, shooting shorter cartridges in a chamber made for a longer cartridge doesn't apeal to me. I prefer to stick with a dedicated gun for a dedicated cartridge.

Here are some of my 45 ACP revolvers. The 4” ones are the ones I carry. The longer ones get range time, the 25-2 more than the others.

A couple of them are custom built but all are very practical.

As for 357 magnum, I don't mind the kick but I don't like the blast in a carry gun. That crack is just awful to me even with ear pro on.
I've found out today that Charter has started making the bulldog in 45 colt. I knew they had the pitbull in ACP but I've always been hesitant on it based on extraction. But a 5 shot 45 colt at 22oz sounds like a good deal to me. 250gr slugs going a possible 800 fps? Seems like that would mess up someone's day.

If you can find a Mountain Gun in .45 Colt, you can have it cut for .45 ACPs in moon clips.

In my photo, the revolver on the bottom left is a 4” barreled 1917. Later today I will weigh it and let you know how heavy/light it is.

I carry them all but the 1917 is the lightest.

I think there is a better chance of Ruger coming out with a snubby red hawk (backpacker) in 45 colt than there is for S&W to revive their snubby 625/325s in 45 colt. Seems like 45 colt has been pushed to the side in the double action world. Will have to wait for it to be "rediscovered" in a few years......hopefully.
