Need sight info for a chopped model 10

The sight blank I would use initially would be tall and allow me to file it down. It would not be the final night sight, but would allow me to measure the height and order a corresponding height night sight.

I believe there is a ballistic explanation of the dwell time of a bullet in a barrel in Hatcher's Notebook.

That assumes you can order a front night-sight the height you want. It would be a shame to find you had a dovetail cut and couldn't order a sight tall enough, short enough, or you were in-between sizes.
They really just don't make that many sight heights for most dovetails so you really do have to be quite close before make that cut. Well, if you want a firearm that shoots to sights that is. If you are just going for minute-of-perp at 7 yards then it's pretty easy.

Seems like a lot of bother just to take one inch off the barrel.

I picked up the gun today from my FFL. It is a gun that has seen it's share of holster time and life on the street. I can relate as my duty guns had wear and got banged around. I look forward to having it customized to fit my tastes.

He is my project gun. I cleaned it up with some copper scrubbing pad and steel wool (both with oil) on the few rust/pit areas. I then used Simichrome to clean the whole gun. I put Ren Wax on and buffed it. The gun is a great platform for the chop job.

I ordered a set of used Pachmayr compact grips and will bob the hammer. I have a couple of Millett dovetail front sights in my gun box. I will ask the gunsmith if these have the same dovetail as a common sight (like a 1911). I might use one as my sight blank to determine height.

4" round butt model 10............ I'd keep it a 4" gun ....... rebuild as necessary and reblue.........

Second look...looks like it's a nice shooter grade gun... just clean it up and get some new grips!!!!!

This will be my carry gun, replacing my 2" model 15-3. The gun will carry IWB nicer as a 3" than a 4". When I sit down, the 4" barrel prints out the bottom.

Actually some companies, namely Dawson Precision, WILL make custom height sights. If the OP uses a standard dovetail dimension, such as a Novak cut, then Dawson will be more then happy to make the site to order

I tend to try simple methods first, no cutting etc. Could you not lay a straight edge along the front and rear sight, mark 1" back from the existing sight and measure the distance from barrel to straight edge?

That method will not compensate for bullet leaving barrel sooner and therefore lower than a longer barrel. Will also not compensate for less muzzle weight causing barrel to rotate up quicker. But, it may be a wash.

But, just exactly how accurate to you need it to be? It is going to be a 3" self defense gun. To me this is pie plate accuracy at 10 yards. If it is 2'' low just how horrible is that. I would rather be a bit low with a self defense gun then high. In them rather than over them.

Then there is the sight picture deal. During the day time will you use top of sights picture and at night use the colored dot picture? This will change point of impact.

I ordered a new-old-stock DAO hammer from ebay and installed a Wilson spring kit (14#). I ordered a .170" NOVAK dovetail front sight from amazon for $14 and will give it a whirl to see where it impacts with the 3" chopped/slab sided barrel its going to get. The original sight was .165" tall.
