I bought the standard M&P15 awhile back with the carry handle. I have been wanting to get some optics for it. Can you guys give me some recommendations.

I think I would like something that mounts on top of the handle so that I can use my fixed sights as well. And I want something thats is not too expensive.

Or maybe I should just remove the handle and just use the optics for sighting. The only AR I have fired is my own so don't really have anything to base my choice on. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

What do you want to do with it, and how much is your budget? Cheapest of the optical sights that you'd want to bet your life on would be a C-more railway unit. You'll want to stick some sort of BUIS -ARMs, GG&G, what not - behind it if you're going to remove the carry handle and do a flat top mount.

Aimpoints, ACOGs, and EoTechs are also popular. However ACOGs in particular are rather pricey, the best of them run about what three mid level ARs cost.

Consider the Armalite one piece scope mount and a 1.5X5 Leupold scope. It will allow a full sight picture (both eyes open) for close and personal, yet allow you to crank up to 5 power for longer shots.

I understand that the Colt made scope that mounts on top of the carrying handle is still available at decent prices from J&G, CDN, etc. Copies of this type of scope are frequently advertised for sale in the Shotgun News as well. While not perfect, this is a reasonable, and economic optics package for the ARs - particularly the older ones with a fixed handle.

Best of luck,

Dave
