Need Suggestions For What To Do In Vegas

There are exotic cars for sure, the likes of which I'd never have a chance to check out if not in Vegas. Funny though, when I did rent a car I picked the ol 55 Chev. Wife couldn't understand why, she said "If you like them so much just drive the one you have in the garage. Try something different if you are renting one." I guess I like what I like.

What was really interesting though was when I pulled up to the valets at our hotel in it, they basically ignored the guy in a new Maserati to come take my keys. I mentioned that he was there before me, the response was "We see cars like that every day."

They kept it parked right at the front for me, where everyone could see it. Every time I walked outside someone was polishing it. Kinda funny since it really wasn't anything special, maybe a 10k dollar car at best.

This was us at the dam with the rental, a 4 door to boot!:

Never got a free drink in a casino, I must scream "He ain't spending here." Not even when I sat down beside my wife when she tried out a slot machine. I guess they know what to look for in a paying customer.

Get out in the desert and go for a walk.
Play people bingo, wander through the gambling area looking for a Japanese tourist without a camera, an Asian tourist with normal looking shoes, 4 beehive hairdos, overweight people using the menu instead of the buffet.
Try to find exotic foods you have never had the opportunity to see or taste. When I worked on the road I got tired of the same suppliers giving the same foods to restaurants.

If you go to Red Rock Canyon, for something different do it by horseback or take the scooter tour. Maybe a 30 minute drive from The Strip, but both the horse and scooter tours offer pickup at your hotel.

The West Rim of the Grand Canyon has a glass bottom Skywalk (about 1 1/2 - 2 hours from Vegas, but there are tour buses you can take also).

How about a balloon ride?

And last but not least, just be by your wife's side and enjoy watching her enjoying the time your spending with her. Marriage is a 60/40 split, and you both have to give 60. Vegas may be your turn to give 60.

If you have wheels...

Front Site Training range is only 55 miles away. I can not think of a better way to spend an afternoon then sending lead down range. JA

My business partner, myself, and our wives are flying to Vegas tomorrow for 4 days. Going to the World of Concrete convention as we have for the past few years.

Thing is, I am tired of Vegas. I'm not a gambler, I've been to all the "shows" I can handle and then some. I've walked the length of the strip more times than I can count, and have zero interest in spending any time or money in a casino.

I've rented a 55 Chevy to cruise around in, seen the Hoover Dam, I've paid a crazy amount of money to shoot a few mags through a Thompson etc, just don't know what to do with myself while I'm there.

My travel companions have a few things planned (Lady Gaga concert, NHL game) but I'd honestly rather watch the back of my eyelids than attend either of those events.

There is a place where you can go drive a dumbed-down version of a trophy truck and take it over an off-road course outside of town but I'm kinda luke-warm on that idea too.

I am looking forward to eating a burger at In-n-Out, and it is a nice hotel we are staying at. Beyond that, I'm stumped here. Any help?

I'm actually really not looking forward to this trip, but I need to find something to do so I'm not a downer as my wife is really looking forward to this mid-winter getaway.

Great time of year to hit Zion, but oops, 45 may have closed it. There are some great gun shops and a couple of gun clubs worth checking out.
Go off strip for the BEST food. BEST Mexican, Lindo Michoacan. Run by Javier Barajas. Fresh tortilla made on the spot. Family wer well known restaurateurs in Morelia a couple of decades ago. Do the store on Desert Inn. Valley of Fire and Red Rock are great drive and hiking spots. Remember prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas and there are scores scams to steal your dollars, thinking you're gonna get lucky. If you wanna get lucky go to Pahrump.

As a retired LEO I hearken back to the last LEO class I took to maintain my certification; It was about the ongoing problem with prostitution on the Las Vegas Strip and at the Fremont Experience. The only thing that has stuck with me since retirement is that the Instructor told us that it was a fact direct from the Clark County Health Dept. that about 25 % of the female hookers had active STDs and about 33% of the male hookers had STDs. Which at that time meant HIV/Aids. So, you outoftowners coming into town thinking about hooking up might ought to rethink your goals. ........... Just sayin'. Think of this post as a public service announcement.

Kerry, you have my sympathy. Last time I was in Vegas I saw the hot new band called Blood Sweat and Tears their first concert in LV. (Thats how long ago). Haven't had the urge to go back since.

This is kind of like trying to buy a Christmas gift for someone who has everything, has seen everything, has been everywhere and has done everything. :D

But you folks are giving it one hell of a try. I'll never get to Vegas, but I've sure learned a lot of things to recommend to people who are going.

Thanks for all the advice about prostitutes, probably very sound. But as I said in an earlier post, not really what I'm looking for.

A couple have mentioned going shooting. This is one thing I might be interested in. The first time I went to Vegas we went to a place and shot some interesting old stuff (Thompson, grease gun, M249). But other than the fact that it was probably the only option for me to ever try these firearms out, it left me cold. Big money for 5 minutes of fun.

If I could find a range (preferably out of the city) with a bit of room to stretch it out there is nothing I'd like more than to spend the day with a rifle and a pile of ammo to work on my distance shooting. Doubtful though, when I went to the last one they wouldn't even let you charge the firearm yourself and the RO physically had his hand on your shoulder if you were holding the gun. If I could find a place like that, I'd pay for it.

I understand the liability angle, and I understand that most people who go to these places probably have never fired a gun before but are there because "you can shoot a machine gun in Vegas." They get their pics with a big nasty scary black gun and then post it to whatever social media they prefer.

From what I've seen, gun ranges in Vegas that are available to tourists are for tourists, but not for people who take shooting seriously. And believe it or not, I do take shooting seriously.

I've been to Vegas a lot and I don't gamble. There are a lot of shows I haven't seen, but not many I really want to.

My friend and I will be at the Shot Show this week. Sorry, I can't get you in at this late a time.
We will probably eat at In-N-Out most lunches, but it's not an "attraction" for us as I go there regularly.
One thing I want to do, but can't bring myself to spend the money is eat at the Top Of the World restaurant in the Stratosphere. It would be fun, but I'm not sure it's $150 per person fun.

We will be taking in Penn & Teller on Wednesday.

As crazy as it sounds, the best steak I've ever had there was at the Outback on the strip. I probably just got lucky and they won't be able to repeat it.

If you're willing to spend some more time, you should consider a trip to Front Sight in Pahrump. It's about an hour west of Vegas. Some of the best firearms training in the country. I can get you a membership if you're interested, just shoot me a PM.

Ride up to Rachel, NV and eat at the Little A'Le'Inn Maybe get to see a UFO coming or going. It's the closest town to Area 51.

Rastoff, if you had some free time and the inclination, I'd spring for the transportation, any shooting fees, and I'd buy you a steak at the end of the day if you weren't sick of me by then! Appreciate the thought about SHOT, but understand this is short notice.

Shouldazagged: I sure don't have everything, I haven't seen everything, I haven't been everywhere, and I haven't done everything. The only reason I'm going on this trip is that we can justify it to the taxman because of the convention, and honestly its more for our wives to have a getaway than anything else.

I didn't see anyone mention indoor sky diving...?
Ziplines
Helicopter over the Grand Canyon
Helicopter over Vegas at Night
The Neon Museum (old Vegas lighted signs)
Bellagio Fountains and Conservatory (the lobby is incredibly decorated for each season with amazing displays)
Bonnie Springs Ranch is a former mining town that is now a "ghost town" where you can experience life in the Old West, ride horses, and watch reenacted gunfights.
CSI Experience: CSI: The Experience in Las Vegas preps visitors to become crime scene investigators with evidence from the crime scene. Gather evidence and then enter the crime scene investigation lab to put your crime-solving skills to the test-ooops- doesn't re-open til Jan. 28 should you stay over.
There are several research links you can look up under "Things to do in Vegas besides gamble".
Hope you find something that trips your trigger. :)
P.S. Kind of you to see that the wives get an outing.

I don't like heights, not going sky-diving. I'm 43, too young for a heart attack. Same for ziplines.

I think I said something about helicopters in an earlier post, but if not refer to my comment about heights.

Went to the neon museum last year, kinda cool but still kinda a tourist trap.

Bellagio fountains were outside my balcony last year too. Impressive for about 5 minutes then annoying when I was trying to sleep. Conservatory was too many people with cameras.

Ranch? Might look into that. Six-shooter gunfight would be fun if they let me participate!

Never liked CSI, can't see myself paying a dollar to that.

Not really "kind of me" about the wives, I'm going because they told me it was happening. I'm just along for the ride.

OK, I'm a curmudgeon already. I'm going to bed now, and I'm going to give my wife a big thank you for putting up with me. This has been enlightening, I think I may be difficult now.

I currently live in Vegas and there's so dang much to do I'm having trouble even making a list of all the things I want to do and see!

But liquor, gambling, and hookers aren't among them (BTDT)! :D

There's great shooting to be had that isn't for touristy types northwest on the outskirts at the Clark County range. Lots of good restaurants, museums, the list goes on and on, and on. Seriously, you've ample suggestions here. Maybe you are better off just staying in your hotel with a book?
