MiswayUSA.com has barrel thread protector caps for app. 13.50 Product #: 267295 offered in various sizes. I am sure Brownells offers similar products.

Thank you just what i was looking for,now if i could find out the difference between a barrel shroud and a hand guard i might be able to keep this thing. Thank you again

I think a barrel shroud thingy is something that pops up and shoots. Kinda like the predator has on his shoulder.

I'll give you $200 right now for the 15-22. It has a barrel shroud. I know nothing about Illinois gun laws but here in iowa we can open carry with a barrel shroud and flash hider.....

I took my barrel shroud off and put a magpul furniture kit on it. With the hand guard in replacement for shroud. But I don't know what your states crazy laws are so don't quote me. All I know is according to idiot politicians the barrel shroud is evil. Or at least evil looking. Besides the black what looks scary on your gun to others?

The barrel shroud is the part that you attach accessories to. Here is a links to get It swapped

When you order the thread cap from brownells or midway order a delta ring kit, hand guard.

Ummm.... no.

The factory 15-22 does not have a barrel shroud. That's a handguard. The special tool and aftermarket nut are used to REPLACE the OEM handguard with any number of standard ar-15 free-float handguards. Handguards may (or not) have picatinny rails for adding accessories.

A barrel shroud is a cheesy metal tube that screws onto the barrel, making it look like a suppressor (aka silencer). You can see lots of different barrel shrouds at S&W MP 15-22 rifle - Kineti-Tech.

If the threaded barrel is restricted in your state, you will probably need to have the thread protector pinned and welded. Merely threading a cover on probably won't make you compliant. Do you also have to have a fixed stock? Perhaps, you can find someone in a friendlier state to swap uppers with...

I would make sure the configuration is what I wanted before deciding and do it fast. You will have to have whatever it is permanently affixed to the barrel and won't be able to remove the barrel nut after you do. If you want to change out the handguard at somepoint in the future, you will have to go to extraordinary lengths to remove any muzzle device with a diameter greater than the barrel. You need to make your rifle compliant as soon as possible to remove the risk of getting in trouble for having one that isn't.

As long as it's in good shape if be willing to trade you my unthreaded barrel for your threaded one... I want the flash hider but the one I bought would have to have the threads cut. PM me if you're interested in a barrel swap.
