need to know the meds to take for gout...

In the short term....

Ibuprofen, drink lots of water.

Cut down on sugar intake and alcohol.

citrus fruits.

I would say keep your feet up,but it hurts worse when I'm lying down in bed, so that doesn't seem to be of any help.

Foot pain from gout when in bed can be caused by the pressure and weight of the bed clothes. There is an inexpensive support you can get from Wally world to take the pressure off:

Hot water baths help too. I used to use ice to help the pain, but the crystals form more easily in cooler temperature (that's why the attack in the toes so often--they are the coolest part of the body).

My last attack was bad enough to send me to the hospital in pain. I had hoped for a cortisone shot in the toe, but after waiting in agony for three hours the doctor saw me for three minutes, gave me a script for colchicine and charged me $400. By that time my doctor had opened his door, so I drove to his office from the hospital and he gave me narcotics for the immediate pain, which I didn't usually take for the attacks, but I was in such pain I didn't care.

Colchicine, "take three times a day until symptoms subside or diarrhea ensues"... no thanks.
Allopurinol "joint pain, stiffness, rash..." uh huh

I had monthly gout episodes. Used to cure them with veterinary Prednisone that I keep in my livestock meds kit. Grow a hump or burn out my kidneys with Ibuprofen?
I cured mine with a triple dose daily (as in EVERY day) of Curcumin supplement and 3 grams of Vitamin C powder. Eating Curry once in a while won't do the trick. Curcumin is under investigation for its anti-inflammatory effects. Everything I enjoy eating or drinking is implicated with gout. I haven't changed my diet and haven't had gout in over 5 years. YMMV

How true the bolded above is for me. Have had Gout now for a bunch of years. I love shell fish and mushrooms, which are bad for me as I have Gout. My Doc put me on Uloric and that has done the trick.. After a while I started doing shell fish/clams and mushrooms again and all was well. Now I do not even think about it when we go out for dinner.

When It first started it was so bad as others have stated even just the sheet resting on you feet hurt. I was scripted Tylenol#3 (Codine) and that was the only way I could get to sleep.

As far as the pain level it can be quite intense. I have had shingles and to be honest the pain is about the same.

Yes the Uloric is expensive but it works and fortunately I have a very good health plan and they pay the lions share for the drug.

I control my infrequent gout attacks -- maybe once or twice a year -- with my diet. I love lima beans, black beans, and Brussels sprouts, but they don't like me. There are a few beers that don't like me, too.

If (when) I have an attack I try to retrace my eating/drinking over the previous few days to figure out what caused it. I can generally nail it down, and I add another "don't eat/drink that" item to my list.

I drink more than a gallon of water every day.

I've tried cherry extract (concentrated juice) from a heath food store (really expensive), and still the one thing that cures a bout of gout for me is time. Sometimes the excruciating pain lasts for three or fours days.

I've never mentioned gout to my doc. I'm not going to take prescription medicine for anything, and he knows that, so there's no reason for me to waste his and my time discussing gout.

I'm not tough, just stubborn.

two bit, how do you find out what foods caused an attack?
as far as i can tell, it happens to me when i'm eating normally.
since you won't take meds, i bet your attacks aren't severe.
the first time it happened to me, a gentle breeze wafting across the room was enow to start me screaming.

The only sure way I triggered an attack was by stopping eating. If I got a cold, which stopped me from eating much but soup, I was sure to follow it up with a gout attack. If I changed my diet significantly in any way, it triggered an attack. Gout attacks for me varied wildly in pain. Most were bearable, but there were three episodes that were not, including the last. I sure am glad the allopurinol worked for me. I'm also glad it occurred mostly in my foot and not the hands.

Hi Susie,

Everyone is different. I think I'm very lucky.

I researched the long lists of available "culprit" foods and drinks that are high in uric acid. I would pay close attention to each one on the list and determine whether it had a bad effect on me. If it did I quit consuming it. I'll go back to the "I think I'm very lucky," thing because my personal list is pretty short.

I'm convinced the "list" is different for each individual. I am a big beef and pork eater -- no ill effects. I drink beer -- only a few (like Fat Tire) give me a fat toe. I drink single malt Scotch whisky -- no ill effects.

Ralph Waldo Emerson must not have been plagued with gout when he said, "Moderation in all things." Soup containing white or Lima beans, even if I don't eat the beans, will send me into orbit so, no, not even in moderation can I consume those. I can have a taco salad with a few black beans, but if I have a side of black beans with a great Mexican dish I'm going to pay for it so I don't do it.

Several years ago a friend fixed a white bean, bacon, and other stuff soup for our weekly band get-together. I ate a big bowl of the soup. That gout bout lasted three weeks, and I thought I was going to have permanent damage to my calf muscles from over-compensating the way I walked to avoid the pain in my big toe.

I have learned to eat the same things all the time. My diet is by no means boring (to me, at least), and I don't mind not eating or drinking the things that I know will trigger an attack. I "get" the "slightest breeze" concept. It's miserable.

By comparison to many afflicted with gout, I think I have it easy. I wish it were as easy for all as what I've figured out for me, but I understand that I'm very lucky.

thanks, two bit.
i just looked up gout causing foods.
there's not that much agreement between the sites except for booze, organ meat n fish.
i don't eat much of these.
they also talk about turkey, so i'll check what happens when i have that.
they also mention white bread.
that i make every week n can't possibly stop that.
is there a definitive list out there?
oops, i just found the mayo clinic site. that should be correct.

Yes, that's a good site. There are a lot of crappy advertisement sites, so stick with peer-reviewed non-profit sites. As I'm sure you've seen there are a lot of people that sell snake oil as miracle cure alls. I think they call them . . . snake oil salesmen.

Sugar and dairy fat (cheese) are believed to contribute to it too

so, all the good stuff causes gout?
to get rid of it you eat salad n water?
that makes meds sound real good.
