It will be my birthday tomorrow, And today I will be doing the gun shop circut. Have some $$$ in my pocket and will be bringing the dog with me!
Now for my birthday I want to give myself a gift "That keeps on giving" I want to QUIT SMOKING and I think I may need some help.
Any of you that have been through this before Please chime in with any suggestions you may have. I am not opposed to hypnotism if it worked for you ! I feel as though I am being realistic in giving myself this gift, And want/need to quit ! ! ! I am still healthy with nothing wrong with me and will be 43, 03-08-09.
It's not like I said I am going to stop buying guns! So this should be easier! !
Any help folks IS appreciated!
Thanks for everything!
Peter.

It is really very simple and it is the method I've used since 1985 !!

Don't smoke on the day of your birthday. Then don't smoke the next day. All you have to do is not smoke on that day. Don't think about a week, month or year down the road. When you get up - quit for that day ! Good luck !!

My husband went on the Patch. He started out with level 2 because he didn't smoke enough for the biggest patch, which gave him a headache. He followed his own needs, not the timetable that comes with the program, and stepped down to the smallest level patch after a month. He wore that patch for another month or so and gradually would forget to put it on. It took a couple of months but he's been smoke-free for seven years.

Hello Peter.

My wife and I, along with two other adult family members have been long term smokers. (We are all in our 50's.) In past years, we have tried the cold turkey method, the patch, hypnosis and Zyban. None of these worked for any amount of time, if at all.

In January and on various dates, all of us began taking a medication called Chantix.
Although still a bit early, all of us to date, have not smoked.

Of the four of us, one lady is finding that quitting very easy. Two of us are experiencing heightened levels of irritability, but have no urge to smoke. The fourth person has not smoked in over a month, but finds it to be a daily struggle.

Chantix is working well for us, but I would suggest the you do some research, talk with your physician and try to pinpoint what will work best for you. There are many methods of smoking cessation available.

Happy Birthday and good luck to you!

Hey Pred..first off Happy Birthday..
since were the same age, and both trying to quit smoking, keep in mind that at roughly five bucks pack now... one pack a day over a year equals little over 1,825.00 thats a lot of S&W money going up in smoke.
anyhow i wish you luck , it's a nasty habit and one thats difficult to get over.

I smoked from age 12 until 44. Probably a pack a day from 18 to 44. Did some chew in between. Got a good nicotine addition. At 44 I decided to stop drinking alcohol and smoking on the same day. For me the answer was 10 minutes at a time. Whenever the urge to light up hit me I would tell myself that I could do anything for 10 minutes. Before that time would pass the urge would pass. Good luck.

Howdy Pred. Happy Birthday!

Great gift to give yourself. I was a heavy smoker for 30+ years. I thought I would never be able to quit. The hypnosis thing was a waste of money for me. I did the group thing, and twice with the one on one thing. Both were a joke.

I quit once for 8 months by using the patch for a few weeks. I went back to smoking for another nine years after that.

This time, I used CHANTIX. It is a new "quit smoking" drug that you take for one month. Some folks use it longer, but I didn't have to. The good thing about Chantix, is that unlike the patch, you can still smoke while on it. They actually suggest that you do for the first week.

You pick a quit date, and start taking the pills one week prior to that day. During that first week, you keep cutting back on the amount you smoke, so that you are down to maybe one or two cigarettes per day. When your quit day arrives, just stop smoking. I was unable to quit completely after only one week, and it was another five days before I stopped completely.

You continue to take the pills for the next three weeks. It works by blocking the neuro-receptors that control the addiction/craving part of your brain. I won't lie to you. It is still a struggle to stay smoke free after that. Some folks take the stuff for an additional month. I kept a bunch of twizzlers licorice with me in my work vehicle. Gum, hard candy, etc. all helped. The biggest help was the Chantix. I found that as long as I wasn't thinking about smoking, the urge was not there.

Some people claim to have had crazy dreams while taking this stuff. To me, that was no biggie. I dream a lot anyway. It's kind of like going to the movies every night when I hit the sack!

Small price to pay for getting that monkey off my back.

In eleven days from right now, I will be smoke free for one and a half years! I have saved over $5500.00 in that time. I think I will treat myself to another gun! BTW, rewarding yourself for not smoking is encouraged! Good luck. You can do it! The most important element of being able to quit smoking is that you have to really want to quit. When you dcide you are done, be done. The Chantix just made it a whole lot easier.

Pred,

Every time you go to purchase a pack think about all the tax dollars you're sending to the SOB's in Washington to squander on more socialist programs! There's another big fed increase April 1st.

Get angry enough about it where you will not participate any longer. You're not quitting because you need to or want to, it's a policical statement!

Worked for me.

First, Happy Birthday!
Was a smoker for 45 years. Zyban, nothing. Cold turkey, nothing. Quadruple bypass, nothing! I mean I was hooked and had the monkey well and truly on my back?
Chantix and 6 days later. Haven't had one since election day 08'.
Don't quit trying! Because I had...

The patch worked for me--on the third try. It's important to start the patch the night before you want to stop smoking; you'll avoid the urge to have a morning smoke by loading up on nicotine. April 16 marks six years since I had a cigarette.

After quitting dozens of times, using every tool available, acupuncture, hypnotism, pills, patches etc, I came down to the final attempt. I convinced myself that I was stronger than the monkey on my back and quit again, this time cold turkey. It has been 10 years, and I have never had "just one" on a bad day, cause I know without a doubt, it would have me by the nads again.

Good Luck and Happy Birthday

I would do what the others have said about just quitting for the day, don't focus on anything but that one day. I have quit and started back so many times it isn't funny. Now I am in a pattern of I only smoke at work. That means four days on and four days off, on my days off, or when I am at home, I don't touch them. I need to graduate again to the no smoking at all.

Need to quit Smoking, Need some help!

This'll do the trick! It's a one step program. The first step is a little rough but it last and it's not temporary!

I joke but I know how hard it is to quit at least one of those habits. Good luck to ya.

If you're a drinker, stay out of the bars....That's what always gets me..wanna smoke when drinking at a bar.

Here is a good resource for you to use in PA. It is paid for by the tobacco companies, they got you into this mess, they can help get you out.

http://www.determinedtoquit.com/

Everytime you feel the urge to light up a cigarette, drink an 8oz glass of water.

Avoid the things you normally associate with smoking, such as drinking alcohol, or other things you can think of.

If you back slide, don't beat yourself up over it. Just start over knowing you made so far before, so there is no doubt you can go furthur next time.

If you are a veteran, check with your local VA and see if they have smoking cessation classes and help for you. We have classes, give out the patch, and other drugs at the VA where I work.

Hi Peter,

Happy Birthday! Okay, down to business: true story - I was an AVID smoker from the time I was 16 yrs. old until I was 32 yrs. old. It didn't help that I wanted to look cool and tough (I was a shrimp and a social outcast, and very insecure about myself) and that smokes used to be dirt cheap ($0.50/pack, half that while I was in the Army). I also had a very high stress job that I really loved (ER Nurse) that sustained myself on by smoking and drinking coffee. Well, I got lucky and met the lady that became my wife and we married in Sept. 1988. She had been on this really stringent diet plan and had reached a plateau and was very discouraged. I decided to be a nice supportive husband and sign up for a stop-smoking class at work to show her that I cared and could feel her pain. My intent was to go through the motions, and bail out of the program after a few meetings as I had no intentions of quitting. I LOVED SMOKING!!! I was the poster child for the Marlboro Man - Man! Son of a gun, a couple of weeks into it, something clicked, something made sense and before I knew it, I got it. I quit smoking without any hassles, without any pain, without any longings, without any regrets on Oct. 19, 1988. The name of the program is SMOKENDERS. I don't know if they are still in business or not, but I know they work, and they work very well. Best of luck to you, Peter. Please let us know how things work out for you.

Best wishes, and good luck,

Dave

Get a hot mistress who hates smoking and is great in bed...you'll find it much easier to quit.

I wouldn't let him smoke in the new house and he locked himself out on the porch one winter night when he went out to have a smoke, dressed only in his bathrobe, while I was out of town. He had a telephone with him but couldn't remember my cell phone number and had to wait for my evening phone call so I could tell him how to break into the van to push the garage door controller and let himself back in.

Not only did he quit smoking but we got an electronic keypad for the garage door.
