We all can get caught up and use the anti-gunners terms. We need to stop doing this.

Large capacity magazine should not refer to any magazine above 10 rounds. Instead we should only use this for maybe 50 or larger magazines. Any magazine holding "normal" amount of rounds like 15, 17, 20, etc. is just that...normal.

We should not refer to AR-15 type rifles as Assault Weapons. They are semi-automatic rifles. plain and simple.

If we use the anti-gun terms, they control the narrative. We need to stop doing this.

No. Simply no. I won't play those games.

In fact, I've been known to use "assault rifle" in conversations precisely because I enjoy annoying wannabe language policemen.

With all the politically correct language already being enforced, I'll be darned if I'm going to watch my language around gun owners. Especially when you're apparently starting to make up random stuff like your new correct definition of "large capacity magazine".

As long as you know what an assault rifle is. It is a full auto long arm using an intermediate-power cartridge. If you don't know what an intermediate-power cartridge is, and why it is important to the definition of a an assault rifle, you need to leave the discussion until you learn why. Kind of like a physician staying out of a medical consultation if he doesn't understand what the competent folks are talking about.

Sorry. That ain't gonna happen...at least not with this ol' guy. That's like going into a restaurant and not saying, "Yes, we have reservations," for fear of offending the Native American clientele.:D

I'm going to have to agree with Absalom on this one. Hey, I've had to speak in politically correct terms throughout my 30 years of employment in higher education. At this point in my life I'll be darned if I'm gonna start watching my language around like-minded gun owners. I don't care if certain whackos in our society refer to semi-automatic firearms as "assault rifles" or any magazine above ten rounds as "high capacity." Let's face facts. Those people don't know the difference between manure and honey anyway.

No.

More PC language isn't the answer.

If a magazine holds a bunch of rounds, its a high capacity magazine.

And we gun folks used to embrace the Assault Weapon name. It didn't come from anti-gunners - it came from us.

We could call them Murderguns and it wouldn't matter.

Shooting sports and casual talk referring to firearms as "weapons".

I cringe when I hear it.

Those other discussions like (LEO, Self Defense, and Military) I accept it.

Papa

See if it has the same effect on you.
I replaced the word firearm with weapon.

Rules of Weapon Safety

1. The Weapon is always loaded.
2. Never point the Weapon at something you don't want to destroy.
3.keep your finger off the weapon's trigger, til your sights are on your target.
4. Know your target and beyond.

Shooting sports

Your welcome to bring your weapon out to the shooting bench,
Show your weapon is clear.
Your welcome to take a sight picture.
Do you know what the course of fire is?
Charge and make your weapon ready?
Shooter are you Ready?

I guess it really doesn't bother me that much. I suppose it just depends how it's used. But, that's just me.:)

Meh. I refuse to be inaccurate when describing firearms. My son's Saiga is a semi-automatic shotgun, my AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle.
Truth be told I've never really considered categorizing magazines by capacity. So my hundred round Thompson magazine is a "magazine".

Regarding the supposed dichotomy between "weapon" and "firearm", yes they are.

I grew up around a WWII veteran Grandpa and a Korean War Veteran dad. They called magazines—"clips." I did not know any better until I joined this forum in '14 I believe. I thought I was really dumb until I read this I found in a search:

Well, the WW2 and Korea War M 1 rifles did load with clips-8 rounds.

As for language, I don't use the term Assault Rifle, not because I think it is harmful, but because it isn't the correct term for any weapon seen on the civilian market. Anyway, I won't let the antis dictate my use of language. I use the term battle rifle, though. I might use "high-capacity" magazines because that's what they are and I don't personally attach any negative connotations to those words. High capacity magazines only apply to handguns; doesn't apply in the typical battle rifle, where 20 round mags are the norm, outside states like CA. Anyway, not mentioning them isn't going to change anyone's mind.

I think I can remember a time before "Assault Rifle" was used. I think it came to be used in the early 80s, and was first used by gun mags.
